When travelling, do you use a tripod bag or place your tripod in your backpack?

im travelling to hk next week with my gf, and i dont know if its a hassle to carry the tripod bag everywhere, or just take it during the night time.

On a related topic, for those without ND110 filters, will you carry your tripod in the daytime?

well if you are strong and your stamina good :bsmilie: (or your tripod is reasonably light) then bring it with you all the time...because you never know when you may meet low light conditions (eg thick fog or taking indoor shots...)

i think the more important thing is you bring as little lens as possible...best if you got super long range walkabout lens like 18-200...flash is your personal preference...well you can always reduce the power of your flash instead of using an external one

hope that helps

Im not too worried about the weight. its just that im planning to use a slingbag (cross sling), so if im also slinging my tripod (cross sling), it will look weird and not to mention unbalanced. Preferably i want to have 2 hands free so i can use my DSLR effectively, as well as take care of my gf if need be.

Im planning to just bring my 16-85 with sb-600. and some filters.

Does anyone use a bag like kata 123 Go with a tripod pouch at the back for overseas travelling?

If you are travelling in the day, especially if you are with you GF or family, I would strongly suggest you not to bring your tripod along. You will feel tired after sometime.

Leave your tripod at the hotel and and grab it maybe after dinner, to take some night scenes.

As for night scene. If you are unaware of shooting places. I strongly recommend this place.

If you are travelling by MTR, alight at Tsim Sha Tsui, take the exit "J" You will see the sign Avenue Of Stars. After exit, you will see Inter Continental Hotel, over there, there should be lots of tourists.

Let me share with you a shot taken at night in the Avenue Of Stars.

@hotchoco1ate,

I typically carry the UltraPod ll. It weighs mere grams (4 oz !!!), and is very flexible in terms of attaching itself anywhere, a pole, a tree, anything at all..
I carry the GF1, which is Ultra-Light, with the 9-18mm Olympus attached to it all the time. A Holiday is a Holiday. A shooting trip is something else. Mix the 2 up, and your GF will dump you for sure !! :p

As insurance, I also carry the 40-150mm Olympus as well. It's so light that one can hardly feel it's weight, and can be carried around in it's own pouch in my waist bag. As good as the Panasonics are, they are arguably heavier than their Olympus counterparts. Bar the stabilization, I find little difference, if not none, in the IQ Dept. I'm not shooting lens charts. I'm taking pictures. So I don't really need to nitpick at all.

Having said that, my Manfrotto is safely kept in the hotel room, till I need it, for whatever reason. Hope this helps.

The pix below was shot with the Ultra-Pod, coz I was shooting it in IR. The exposure was 30secs or something. Not something you can do handheld....

Hey thanks for the advice. Ya was previously advised to only bring out when needed. Nice pic btw :)

Is the mini tripod like the Joby gorilla pod? Im not really a fan of these gadgets since im using a d90 and a 16-85 which is not that small. Plus the Joby is pretty short, which i dont quite like. But it seems good for your kind of use though. :)

Thats exactly what my gf proposed! But which bf will want their gf to carry their own stuff for them? I wonder what will the public think if they see it. Unless my gear is super heavy already, i doubt i will resort to that.

Thanks for all the input :D Will prolly take my Sirui along only in the evening time after i put down all my 'loot' from the day shopping.

erm..
how heavy is ur tripod with ball head?

i just hook the tripod bag with my belt and there goes all my problem(only hve to becareful when i'm running cos the tripod will hit my feet everytime i take step lol :p)

Its 800g + 350g = 1.15kg

Wah it sounds very awkward to walk long distances like that. And i realised something when i carry things that tend to swing - when i hold my DSLR, it cannot steady because of the angular momentum of the swinging object..

yup very awkward i usually got the "what the..." stare from peoples lol :p, actually when i stop moving the tripod weight(1.6kg) will focus on the center back(the position on the belt where i hook my tripod) so it actually help me stabilize my body when i'm shooting :D

i carry my tripod by hand all the time when i plan to shoot.

 why can't a holiday be a shooting trip? :)

TS main priorty is to have fun with his GF, enjoy momenta spent together. From my experiences, I walked with my GF down Mong Kok, crowded streets, shopping with my tripod lugged on my backpack... Consequences is you will have backache and very very tired at te end of the day..

I feel it's perfectly fine to bring a tripod with your partner.
I also feel that it's ok for her to help once in a while but to ask her to carry the tripod for you throughout the day is a big No-No!
:)

I think it's fine to carry a Sirui tripod around, they are not very heavy. The bag is nicely padded for comfort too.

nm...it's difficult when your gf / family comprises of non-photogs you know...they tend to get impatient and complaining of cold when you are doing a 30 sec exposure :bsmilie:
