Man-In-Thought.jpg

1. What area is critique to be sought?
Composure, exposure, etc...

2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
A man in deep thought standing at the beach, watching the sunset, waves and letting the breeze to blow away his worry/unhappiness.

3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
While strolling at Siloso Beach during evening time (6.30pm-7pm), noticed this man at the beach standing in same position for well 10-15 mins. Appeared to me either he was meditating, enjoying the moment or in deep thought.
Shooting Mode : Aperture Priority
Shutter Speed : 1/5000
Aperture : f1.4
ISO : 200
Focal Length : 50mm

4. What the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
There are some distraction on the top left (ship). As I shot in Aperture mode, my main focus is the man, thus background will appear oof.

doesn't look like meditating. looks like he's taking a piss. and this photo doesn't look calming at all.

if you want to take a calming picture, strap on an ND filter, and make that person sit down for a long time w/o moving. Only then will it be worthy to title a photo "meditating".

Can't tell that the man is taking a piss from the photo? :dunno:
Anyway, I would not use such wordings.

Generally, meditation is in sitting position, sit straight up and preferably in a quiet place.
Well, the man can be in deep thought base on his standing posture.

To achieve a soothing feeling and calmness by looking at this photo. The sunset, waves and breeze can really clear away one worry/trouble mind.

No offence but I can't feel calm when there's a half naked man in the picture.

I have made an amendment to content of "2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?" after receiving some good feedback. Would appreciate more feedback on the composure and exposure of the photo to help me in improving my skill in future. Thanks.

at its best its just a snapshot. Would be better if the man was facing you,get a tight shot to see his emotions and expressions. just my 2 cents

you are putting way too much thought into a photo which would be simple to most people.

for meditation, you need way more than that to convey the idea of such.

Thanks for the comment. :)

I agree...

the man could have been thinking about the char siew rice he ate for lunch but we will never know.

Anyway, the stance of the man is also a little awkward. Do you have a wider version of the picture maybe?

hmmm...

you should have placed the man on the right side of the frame... not in the center...

rule of thirds.

the man's posture doesn't fit in with the title of the photo.

Somehow he doesn't convey meditation, or even being deep in thought...
I think this angle brings the background too close and makes it distracting as well.

On a positive note, the exposure looks pretty decent :)

Looks like you bro. For a moment I though TS caught you in action....

Anyway this concept is similar to something I tried in Bintan... it did not come out too nice also... partially I was using a 6 year old compact PnS (yea yea yea... blame the gear), and partially, it was getting very dark...

dd123 and ZCA, thanks for comment, I agreed the composition of the man is not ideal.
On further thought, the man does not look like he is meditating, looks like staring into the water and thinking of something.

actually the comment in post #2 is what I initially thought of too :)
I shall not repeat it though
