HDR image of a block of flats

---- When I was testing my friend's kit lens

I actually thought the photo was quite bad taken without consideration for the details..... a snap shot at best. You've got bits and pieces of buildings creeping in from the right and foreground and disconcerting perspective distortions, just to name a few. The photo bears the hallmarks of overdone/badly controlled HDR. Do you understand HDR? Do you even need HDR in this instance?

I took this from the kitchen of my house, so no space for any composition.

Then why did you chosed to take the photo from the kitchen where it restricted you from working on a better composition? Excuses cannot justify bad photos.....

because I was reviewing the kit lens at that time, the whole neighborhood was having some kind of celebration. Anyway the void deck wasn't a good place to take because of the trees. And I'm staying 2 floors below the top, 8th floor to be exact.

you cannot explain this every time to people who will look at your photo... the photo has to speak for itself...

in this case, this shot is nothin more than a snap shot at the best... HDR aspect, Composition aspect... nuthin really.

The horizon of the image is tilted if you noticed, regardless of perspective, anything that is suppose to be vertical in the center of the image should be vertical. The HDR is not well done, you noticed that the upper half of the HDB flat is darker than the lower half, as if a GND filter is being used. There are lots of articles online on how to make decent looking HDR images, very good reference. You made an answer on your short write up, "2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work? ---- A beautiful image of a landscape", if thats the case, do go outdoors to find and work on the best composition. Don't be discouraged, Keep shooting.

IMO, composition has much room for improvement, building is slanted and there are too much distraction. Hope to see more of your put-in-heart work in future.

Hmm for me it looks as though the building is out of focus. Instead i think your focus point was on the tip of the bottom most building.
For this shot don't think there is a need for HDR but you were just testing it out so yup.

No, I didn't. I used Photomatix's "3d effect" on the image to patch up the right hand corner which was originally too bright. No, I didn't use GND...

On closer inspection and scrutiny, the image looks like it has pincushion distortion created using the 18mm end of the kit lens...

Wide focal lengths do not give you pincushion distortions. They give barrel distortions which is not really evident in this instance.

From the numbers & data I gathered from reviews, the 18mm end gives more distortion than others, turning it from "negligible" to "Obvious"...

Did the reviews tell you what kind of distortions they were referring to? Are you aware that there are different types of distortions associated with wide angles? Right now, I can tell you that the distortions you see in your photo are not curvilinear distortions i.e. barrel or pin cushion distortions.

Regardless of the composition of the photo, my view are that for this scene it doesn't require HDR, since there isn't any dynamic range' to show anyway.

Perhaps a search in wikipedia would give you a slightly better picture of what a HDR photo would look like?
