Hi im using a recently bot 2nd 40D with 17-85. My bro fell down with the cam (lens receiving the impact, filter scratched), it showed no problems at 1st. After his photoshoot, it takes the camera eons to focus (keeps going to and fro 2 distances). Even if there's finally an AF lock, AF is super inaccurate (10m when object is only 3m away). The cam also sometimes displays something "Err 1: lens not connected properly or contact needs cleaning." cleaning and re attaching lens doesnt seem to help.

Can someone pls help diagnose the problem? I suspect the AF motor/beam/receiver is damaged, mayb due to USM ring movement during impact. I dont want to go down to CSC and get charge for changing some part that wasnt spoiled. thanks in advance :)

Diagnose via forum? That's like calling a doc asking whether one has lung cancer just by listening to the coughing.
Go down to CSC and have them do a first damage analysis where you can discuss the report and necessary repair works. If not happy you can still go to other repair shops (see list of shops in consumer corner) to verify the findings. But hardly any other shops will have the spare parts. So it's back to CSC.

Hmm u have a point. But mayb some CSer has had similar problem and is able to give me a rough idea of what happened. and i wish to believe that a dslr is less complex than a human body. and thanks for the advice on the other repair shops.

Sounds serious. Hope that nothing is broken.

Sounds like your af sensors got dis aligned from the knock

Probably the lens and body mount got damaged .. better bring down to CSC.

Tried with other lens and body? Anyway, best is bring to CSC for check and repair. You will need to service it sooner or later even if you found out what's wrong with it.

go to peninsula 2nd hand lens shop, pretend to buy while trying out the AF with the lenses there ;)
there's also a camera shop at adelphi ground floor that provide diagnose without any cents needed but can't guarantee at the accuracy since never tried but then again it's free :D

I see. Thanks. Didn't know there's a 2nd hand shop there. But i just went down to CSC straight. The guy quoted me 180 but he says it'll be about a 100 to get the AF motor replaced.

Please ... without knowing anything specific about the damage, the required time to replace damaged parts and the stock situation in CSC for those parts nobody can give you any estimation that is at least halfway close to reality.
