I've been trying to upload one picture for the past 10 minutes, it always give me the time out error. Is this normal for Flickr? Are there any other popular free photo galleries to try?

Try and resize image (make smaller) before uploading.

They range from 120KB to 520KB so can't be too big right?

I have to keep trying and trying until it finally uploads.

I'll try and increase the JPG compression to make them smaller, right now it's at 70%.

no they don't sound too big to me. I frequently upload bigger images than that.
are you using the upload from the Flickr website? or are you using the desktop software?
if you are uploading from the Flickr website, probably you can try the basic uploader @ www.flickr.com/photos/upload/basic/ and see if you still encounter the same issue.

I find the Fireuploader add-on to Firefox to be pretty good.

no problem with uploads.

Why do you blame Flickr? From your computer to the Flickr servers it's a long way and a lot of things can go wrong. In many cases it is worth checking the equipment at your desk / place, not forgetting the person in front of the keyboard :bsmilie: Chances are very high to find the root cause there, since Flickr works well for many other users.

no problem with uploading big files . . . think it is your connection speed . . .

i am using their pro account. i usually upload full size image from my cam using their macbook version of flickr upload. no issues for me except sometimes a bit slow (maybe network congestion).

Thanks, I tried all the methods available on Flickr, I still get the same results. Eventually after several tries it works (like 30-40 minutes later).

Not blaming Flickr, just wondering why I can't upload properly. Have used Flickr for a while now though on and off and didn't have this problem before (even tried batch uploading). Just wondering if its because I'm using a free account? Or maybe its that time of the year.

Suggest you check your upload speed at different time of the day with this:

Thanks trying that now. Getting 26.97 M/b per second download....uploading however is "Preparing upload" which has been a few minutes already.

Tried another site (http://www.ozspeedtest.com) and got this:

You uploaded 104 KB bytes in 59.29 seconds.
kbps: 14.38
KB/s: 1.8
Mbps: 0.01

So yeah could be my internet provider (Bigpond) because that's incredibly slow!

If it worked properly in the past and suddenly you have this issue then try to remember whether you have changed anything in your setup: router, modem, computer settings etc. It looks like a very slow upload link. Try to reconnect your modem to re-establish the link.
Also, certain providers use traffic management software to filter out file sharing activities and excessive upload activities. These connections will be limited in upload speed to make the sharing unattractive and to free network bandwidth for other users. This is usually done on IP basis. Reconnecting will give you a new IP which hopefully is not additionally limited.

make sure u not doing any heavy downloading of files via bittorrent, cos that can affects your speed also.

Same here no problem albeit slower coz of image size.

have you tried using a different browser? like if your using Firefox try Internet Explorer or the other way round. It could also be your Firewall causing time outs or even your Virus checker. I remember I was using AVG(virus software) and you had to disable something for flickr to upload the photos, I think there is something in the Flickr help section.

Thanks you brothers, I think its my provider because I've tried uploading stuff on my own personal website and with a different browser and its still slow. Will try and reconnect the router and reset the IP address to see if it makes any difference. Maybe the net is getting slower for us, at least my downloads isn't affected :)

u can always reset ur connection to see if it helps.

Just an update, I've found out the cause of the problem... bad ethernet cable! Never suspected it because I still get internet connection and my downloads are still fast (1.1MB/s etc).

The cable runs through a few gaps and doors and I think somewhere in between something snapped resulting in an unreliable connection. Anyway, new cable installed and upload works fine.

So Flickr I still love you :)

Thanks guys for your help.
