Hi all CS-ers

Have been surfing the forum and reading all the reviews and comments posting for some time already. Gave me many many nights of great bedtime reads!!!:thumbsup:

Finally decided to take the plunge in posting my very 1st post as well as buying a dslr as a christmas present :D Well, its more for my wife to take my boys in action..

Have zoomed in on a D90 and here's the "best" quote I have gotten so far:

1) D90 kit (18-105mm VR) @ $1528 or $1498 (cash) wif
a) 01 x 8g SD class 4 (kingston)
b) nikon bag (enough space for 2 extra lens at side pouches)

2) D90 kit (18-105mm VR) @ $1688 wif
a) 02 x 8g SD class 4 (kingston)
b) nikon bag (enough space for 2 extra lens at side pouches)
c) drybox
d) filter (some german brand)
e) screen protector
f) cleaning kit
g) card reader
h) extra battery (3rd party)
i) 3 section "big" tripod

Given the opion to purchase the following:
a) nikon battery grip + original battery @ $199
b) 55-200mm @ $199
c) hoya filter 67mm @ $46.50

Assuming am paying wif credit card, the diff btw the 2 packages is $160.
Hence need your opinions if the rest of the "freebies" are worth the price premium
Forgot to add that I already purchased a 30l dry cabinet in anticipation of the arrival of the dslr..... hehehe

Really appreciate all your comments!

well, if you've already purchased a dry cabinet, the 'free' drybox is pretty much useless to you.
I would advise option 1, and buying things that you really need.
However, I suggest you search harder. Your 'best' quote ain't that fantastic..
Have you taken a look at the Nikon Price Guide on clubsnap?

Agreed that your qoute arent very attractive.

Since the priority is for your wife to shoot your boys. You should try to get a body + fast lens instead.

A Tamron 17-50 VR 2.8 would do very nicely for your purpose ( shld be 700).

In addition, if your wife is using , getting a battery grip may add on to the weight making it not so friendly for ladies. Experience with battery grip is , you put it in , you wun want to take it out.

You can ask the Funan shops like TK Photo , SLR Revolution or go AMK ask from Ms Color.

You might want to search harder. Maybe you could try asking around the shops in funan. I got my D90 kit at 1460(cash) and it comes with:

a) 01 x 8gb SD card
b) nikon bag
c) Freebie tripod
d) Lens cleaning kit.

F2.8 lens is not as fast as most people think... especially indoors.

I would suggest a 35mm/1.8 lens.

Appreciate all the quick replies!!! Its like a "instant" feedback channel!

Just to add, the quote is from Audio House (AH) and like to purchase it with the DBS "wow" deal ie $600 rebate wif $2000 purchase. Subsequently mthly spending will likely meet requirement.

Bro Atarandras, did explore getting just body and tamron lens but AH is the only place offering the deal wif DBS.

Bro zerocoolastra, have checked the CS nikon price guide. Cheapest cash price was $1470, posted by you ;-p

Bro strikeback4, just need more opinions if the extra freebies are worth $160? sum of cost of freebies from your inputs is abt $151 - $171 (not including drybox)

Was very tempted to go wif cash purchase @ the "recommended" shops.
Even considered 2nd hand body and lens from BnS.

Just that factoring in the cash rebate, would end up paying about the same price for a brand new set :D

ask them to take out the items you don't need (seems like quite a few) and then ask for a lower price...

bro, already did that.... thats how they came to to first package price of $1528, less $160 from the RRP of $1688

its a gimmick

knowing that the SRP of your "freebies" will be around $150-$180

they just give you $160 discount, fyi some shops will even give you the same free gifts at the price of $1500+-

or else just take the basic set at $1460+-

Yup yup.. in that case, think it would be quite safe to purchase @ $1528 for basic set using credit card. The $68 extra in return for $600 rebate from DBS.

would prob get a hoya filter @ $47, nikon grip + battery @ $199
still deciding on whether to get the 55-200mm.....:dunno:

If both package deals are from the same store, then your "freebies" arent really free, right? Unless the DBS wow promo that you mentioned is an installment plan PLUS the $600 rebate, i'd say u can get a better deal at other shops, whereby they will still give u all those freebies at a lower price than AH.

Just my 2 cents

why not get the 55-200 and try it out... Price seems good. If you don't like it, can always sell it off for the price you bought it for... no financial loss to you. Like 'free trial' :)

i will get without the freebies . . . they are not worth it . . . :)

all my freebies lying in my storeroom and rotting now . . . :bsmilie:

you are right that the "freebies" aint free as its "given" after paying extra $160.

WOW promo is a purchase plan where by you pay full amt first, DBS subsequently rebates you $600 and you have to commit to spending another $16000 within a yr from the purchase.

I don't even spend that much on ALL my cards in 2 years!

from a SRP $1688 to spending $16k in a year =.=

sales world this day

best if we go back to film, no need to worry about all this...

Bro, you pay everything using CASH??? :sweatsm: :sweatsm:

no offence..... I alone dont spend that much too. Its combined spending wif wife :bsmilie:

true also. I still need to bump my ISO indoors under normal lighting or use flash . But a sole prime lens for new users might be restrictive.

TS , you can consider adding in the 35mn 1.8 =D
