Hey guys, i'm currently using lenovo t61. Running on window Vista Business.

When I shut it down, it went to update. It has been running for 30 mins now and no progress. Stuck at 2 out of 19.

I searched online and they say some take the whole day to update.

I currently need to use my laptop urgently. Just wondering, If I unplug or power off it, would there be any error messages?

I tried calling IBM tech support, but I can't get through. I called 800 6011 343

Hope any PC gurus can help. It's really urgent.

just let it finish the update... the last thing you want is to end up with a corrupted Windows machine.

next time you might want to time your update... don't perform critical updates when you know you need to access your computer urgently.

I will just switch to MAC :)

Agreed, it is not recommended to terminate a patching process as code/binary files are being updating. May end up corrupting OS and will take longer time to recover. Patience is only way to go now...

First check if there's a dialog box waiting for your input hidden behind other windows. Minimize all windows one by one - do not click the show desktop icon. If there is indeed something waiting for your input, just follow the prompts there.

If not, you can cancel the update. There should be a button for this, or else close the update window. Doing this is safe. Note that it may take a few minutes for the update to be cancelled.

I think that is ridiculous.. I'll just switch off my machine if it were mine.
Should be no problem.

I would leave it running till it finishes up. Interrupted update might cause hard disk failure?
Not sure...but one thing for sure... i kena the hard disk failure when i did an improper shut down (power off accidentally when the com was shutting down halfway). :nono:

Yes, there's a risk of hard disk failure or corruption if you suddenly shut off the power, although the risk is low. You should do this only as a last resort.

It is safe to shut it down via a hard reset, Windows update will try to resume the next time you shut down which will either continue the process or restart them (can see the yellow exclamation mark via the shutdown option under the Windows button).

The only problems you may face is that if the hard drive is on its way out then it will worsen due to wear and tear.

When you restart Windows may ask to check the system (this is just a safety precaution to check or recover files from the system/page files etc), you can bypass this and boot straight into Windows since you were only trying to reboot the system anyway.
