I sent my kits lens to NSC cos got squeaking sound when AF , the warranty had expired and was quoted $141.00 for
replacing SVM motor. Should I proceed with the repairs, considering the price of 18-105mm is about
$300 in the 2nd hand market.

You said it. Get a new one. Or maybe its time for an upgrade
Since the warranty expired i assume its a well-used lens, let it retire and use the money for upgrade

But i only used it for less than 10 x .
is it true this is a common flaw with 18-105mm. saw in a lot of forum complaining about squeaking sound in nikkor kit lens,
i think it is a manufacturing defects , what do you reckon, can I ask for a foc replacement instead??
warranty over how to ask for FOC replacement? But i only used it for less than 10 x .

anyway it's only a squeaking sound right? Does the lens still work? if it does, why not just use it for as long as possible?
well, I agree it's kinda unglam, but as long as it doesn't make a sound that resembles farting, or burping, I would heck care and use it till it breaks :bsmilie:the xmm's will look pained when your camera squeaks at them? :bsmilie:

but i don't shoot xmm, so I guess my opinion doesn't count...... :embrass:
warranty is over
why should they replace it for you foc?
if it is really a manufacturing defect, i feel nikon should repair foc just likeToyota cars which had serious manufacturing defects causing unintended acceleration problems
furthermore, it seem that i am not the isolate case, a search results shows many similiar issues. I reckon nikon will service it for free.

is this lens seldom used? if so, it is probably becos the lub in the gears are drying out. my ex 17-35 had the same problem. fatigue (aka david) told me just use it more often and the sound will go away.

just collected my kit lens after repairing.
i am happy that NSC only charge me $48 (for parts only) after some "swee" talk. nice gesture from NSC Singapore. Initial quote was $141.00 inclusive of labour.
in life, when you ask you will get it.
