First Landscape Shoot (Beginner)

1. In which area is critique or feedback to be given?
Mainly composition and colour saturation and other pointers and observations are welcome

2. What were you hoping to achieve with this image?
I was going for a romantic feeling, with over-saturated colours and a nice sun that shines largely on the water.

3. Under what circumstance was the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
As this is my first landscape shoot and took up photography like 1 week ago I am bringing a relax and casual attitude in the shoot. The picture was taken around 6.40pm.

4. Thread-starter's personal thoughts about the image.
Personally I feel that I am not really satisfied with the picture as the sunset is not clearly shown.

Nothing particularly outstanding in this shot. Pretty much like any other snapshots.

As a landscape shooter i do face the same problem as you as SG sunsets are not really THAT outstanding.

There is no anchor point and the sun is not "nice" enough as an anchor point. That's why lots of photographers counter this by doing HDR to make the sun outstanding but i don't like it as it seems unnatural but that's just my view point. You can try it if you are interested.

Second thing is you probably could apply the rule of thirds to your horizon? Right now your horizon is right smack in the middle which most of the time is a no-no unless there is a special reason.

Lastly i kind of detect a slight tilt in the horizon but most probably it's just my eyes playing tricks on me. I'm bad at detecting straight or tilt horizon accurately. :sweat:

i have been in london, italy, spain, indonesia, malaysia, hong kong, to name a few. i don't see much difference between the sunsets here , or over there.

to me, nice sunsets don't happen everyday. clouds play an important role as they diffuse the ray from the sun, creating beautiful light. So if you didn't come across beautiful sunsets on one or two occasions, do not conclude that nice sunsets doesn't exist here.

Hello Crystal - I think what Daredevil & Nightmare want to emphasis is that SG's sun is not different from sun in any other country (grass is never greener on the other side)

I'm learning from Daredevil about Landscape Photography (Daredevil, want this student or not?) and this is my shot of MBS on one gloomy SG morning.. no perfect sunrise but I think shoot is still acceptable.

No EDITING, No CROP, No PS, DxO, LR, etc... Straight from Camera, only resize to be web-friendly.. SG can be BEAUTIFUL as well

this is the sort of mentality that will lead to you sitting at home, never going out, and never knowing that singapore has nice sunsets.

True that clouds play an important role thus all this does have to do with a bit of luck as well. Hmm that i still do not know however i do see nice sunsets overseas i just can't remember where exactly..Let me go try to recall back. :cry:

True true. After all there is only one sun! But like i said it all depends on your luck and your skills. That's is a very nice picture but i find that there is too much dead spaces at the top and at the bottom, just my 0.01cent. =D

Now now, don't have to insult my way of living my life now do we?
Sad to say, i'm not much of a lucker. Everytime i go out for a sunset or sunrise shoot it ALWAYS rains, if not is it will be block by clouds. Sigh.
So yeap~ Don't take my experience from unluckiness too personal. =D

Sorry to burst your bubble but you obviously understand close to nothing about sunsets. Luck has a little to do with it, but if you understand the science behind it, you'll realise that bad luck is often just an excuse for not witnessing a good sunset.

Please grow up. You don't sound as if you want to be taken seriously.

Yeap. I don't understand a thing about sunsets because i rarely see one. At most all i see is when i'm passing by on a train and i will go like "Woahhhh...*train goes into tunnel* Damn..."
And sorry to say i totally dislike science. I would sleep if i ever touched a science textbook.
And well since it's an excuse than just let it stay as an excuse. After all it is MY excuse. Hehehe~ =D

And sorry, no matter how hard i want to grow up i just can't! I really really honestly do want to hit the height of 180cm...
Alright jokes aside, whether or not i'm mature or immature it's my damn decision and it's just the way i am. Who are you to ask me to grow up? Whether or not you guys take me seriously it's also your damn decision which to be honest i don't really care.

i may be just a student and have not travel overseas, but from what i see in singapore, i do witness nice sunrise & sunsets. But i know that there are nicer ones out there waiting for me to capture.

skybroodz, some comments : if you want to capture sunset/sunrise, you will have to wait till the sun is just about to set (or just above the horizon)... if the sun is much higher than the horizon, the sunrays will be toooooo bright. (if exposure is taken near the sun, surroundings will be underexposed and vice-versa)

For you shot, I think if you wait longer, the sun will be covered by the thick cloud. Even if there is no thick cloud, it will be covered by the building/forested area. i.e. Dont think it is a great position for the kind of round, big sun during sunrise/sunset.

If the sun is block, but the cloud formation is pleasing, you can still get a good sunrise/sunset. I think you have used global-exposure in your shot, maybe you want to try exposing at area/point near the sun.
