Just saw a very small bottle of Manuka honey today.
Price = $131.

Is this highly over-rated or what?

Just because some marketing smart-ass thought up hyping an active ingredient and make the consumer pay so much more?

How much better is it than normal jungle honey or wild forest honey.

Any users of the Manuka honey and testimonials of its claimed efficacy in all sorts of claims of cures and health benefits?

Or is it a big rip off.....(anyone still remembers the Noni Juice scam from years ago....$80 for 1 bottle..)

It depends... Got my kid to use it from 1 to 2 years to clear his sinus congestion... We've stopped already since his condition has improved... whether it is due to Manuka or not, I don't know... but I'm inclined to believe it do something about it. We got ours from Tangs...

The higher grades of manuka honey can even be applied to wounds to help them heal, not sure how well it works though.

I think 131 is over priced. If you have friends visiting New Zealand, get them to buy for you. It's much cheaper there. I don't know about the healing properties of the honey but I do think they taste much better than the normal honey :)

I dun really like the taste of Manuka honey, and I am not sure of its healing powers apart from usual variant honey

They are much cheaper in NZ than locally. There are several grades depending on how much UMF thing they have. Bought quite abit in NZ including a "high grade" bottle that cost me almost 200 SGD for my parents.

NZ producer accuses British producer who imported Manuka plants and made their own Manuka honey with bees. So, if you take a rubber tree seed from South America and plant it in Malaysia, does it mean your rubber tree latex is fake? Cannot be, right?

Someone said UMF testing is unreliable. And they are charging consumers $$$ for something they anyhow slap a +5 to +50 onto the bottle based on unreliable tests?

Some honey sold locally is so-called Active Manuka, while others are labelled UMF®. Some not labelled Active nor UMF®. Some very tricky. Just use UMF without the ® to give an impression.
Some arguments here as to which is the real thing as the brands attack each other.

What is UMF?
Supposed to be Unique Manuka Factor. Up to you to say, loh... It does not have a scientific medical name. The bees are supposed to visit the Manuka plant and then make their honey. Bees are free flying creatures. Suppose they police the bees and implant RFID onto them to ensure that they actually visit the Manuka trees and not just any other tree/flower/plant.

Noticed that one local TCM has parallel imported their own so-called Manuka honey.
There may be others. So the market is a bit unregulated and every tom dick and harry is using the Manuka name to sell honey at a higher price.

So can our local marketing wizards come up with UKF?

Unique Kopi Factor to sell expensive coffee powder.

Unique Kaya Factor to sell expensive kaya.

Singapore has an advantage here. Our tourism motto is "Uniquely Singapore"

So just borrow the Unique word.

anyway $131 for something which got "healing power". it is consider cheap. it is nothing compare to Kopi Luwak, 1 cup $60, for drinking s.h.i.t.

It's like Noni juice, it's all hype. FYI, you can put ANY honey on wounds, it helps. Honey is a natural antiseptic.

its supposedly tasty i think?
hahaha

Yes, it's very tasty. I have a lot at home.

And you can get it for a lot cheaper than 60 per cup. :)

Honey has been used as an antiseptic for a long time to heal open wounds. It's anti-bacterial qualities make it useful for throat infections. Nothing special about Manuka honey in this regard. Basically overpriced hype imo.

is royal jelly better than manuka honey?

Different things. But in view of the Manuka hype, then royal jelly is better as a health supplement. After all royal jelly comes from the Queen Bee.

If you want to pay a lot then buy royal jelly and not overpriced honey.

Honey (ordinary non-hype) by itself is good. Just that some one came up with an idea to say his bees go to certain Manuka plant/flowers and because of that the honey has got special properties. And add to that the number of middlemen in between, each wanting to cash in on the hype. By the time this reaches you, the price of Manuka honey (those supposedly with high +UMF) is escalated out of all common sense.

Also, take note that once something becomes very expensive, there are inevitably fakes from dubious sources and these can be extremely dangerous to imbibe into your body.

Just buy normal sensibily priced jungle honey or wild forest honey from Indonesia or Malaysia or Chiang Mai (very good).

I tried different honeys and manuka honey mixed with warm water works really well for my throat.
I'm not sure if it's worth over $100 but it does do good things.

I think the UMF just goes through a certification body, and supposedly the company will get a certification code from the body also. Those active are just not certified, so it can based on own standards or something. I think I read before, you need at least UMF 15 and above to have any significant effects. So far, I do find it is pretty good compared to normal honey though, like when I feel like getting sick or something, it seems to help when i drink it with water.

Manuka honey is suppose to be pure honey, without addition of sugar. Not sure about the claim but it certainly tasted very sweet to me. My wife add it to her oat in the morning. It is a source of vitamins and minerals she claim. But I think she is eating it for its taste rather than anything else ;)

these are all health products that ppl trying to profit from..

you hear lots of them like Lutien, gochi, mangosteen, ... Usana, GNC...

ironically, the promotor will claim fantastic result upon himself within a month.. WTF

Hi Rico,

That kind of price is very expensive compare to manuka honey in Australia. I'ts only below $100 depending on the size of a bottle.

But if it has a healing ingredients aside from the honey healing it would raise up to $200 per bottle.
