Nikon 24-120 f4 vs Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM

I'm planning to get a new lens for my D90 (and hopefully use the same lens when I upgrade to full frame).

Which among the 2 do you prefer?

I've been checking reviews of both lenses online and I am still having a hard time to decide.

Although the Sigma is cheaper, the Nikon is weather sealed (please correct me on this if I'm wrong).

Personally i have tried the 24-120 f4 and i find that it is sharper when zoom at 120 even compared to 17-55mm f2.8 when zoom at 55mm.
Disclaimer : maybe my hand is shaking, so i presume i need the VR.

just got home after testing the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro, i find it"s AF faster than the HSM version, and since you are using a D90, you won't need HSM anyways. closest focusing distance of this macro lens is 15inches.

sharpness, well, for me i find it sharp and finds the target right on... but everybody has their own opinion about sharpness... so later, if it's ok with you, i'll post the unprocessed shots i took! i'll only convert it to jpeg as it was taken in raw, other than that, no enhancement at all.


now, this lens is cheaper than the HSM version... so for me, price point : performance this lens gets my vote.

Well, both lenses have their own merits. I have no idea why the DG Macro version is faster for you for AF, but on my D700 the HSM clearly has a focusing speed advantage. If you do intend to get the 24-70 HSM, be aware it will not be easy to sell off. Been trying to sell mine for a month, no takers, not even an offer, even though I have a very sharp copy.

i have the sigma 70-200 APO HSM, and i compared it to the macro version just 2 days ago... the macro version hunts a lot... it's AF is slower than my old HSM version, so i was thinking of getting the HSM version of this 24-70 f2.8. went to funan and try, but, really... the Macro version is faster:dunno: so, it's the one i bought (after testing 3 copies):bsmilie:

Naw, it's okay. I want to get rid of it as soon as possible to fund other stuff.

I have been using the sigma 24-70 hsm and find it a very sharp lens. The color it produce is also very nice and the focus is dead on. It really depend on what type of photography u are looking at, speed or range? but one cons abt sigma is that the bokeh is not really that fantastic but overall it is a very capable lens.

back when i got my sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro, the only thing to compare with is the nikon 24-70 and the price is way too high for me, $850 as compare to $2400++. so got the sigma one. I try to sell this lens before. ready not easy to sell.

if i were you, take the nikon 24-120. the price difference between the sigma HSM and nikon, if i am not wrong, is not very big.

AF speed - for this range of zoom, IMO, the AF speed ain't important at all. We are not talking about a zoom in the range 70-200 for shooting sports/actions where AF speed is important.

So, it doesn't really matter to me in terms of AF speed. To me, AF accuracy is more important - % of spot on sharp focus against not so sharp shots.

I've just sent my Sigma lens for repairs two weeks ago and still no call about the repair price quotation.

The Nikon lens have better support from NSC.

Get the lens that have the backend support.

Hi, I had never used a 3rd party lens before. Just like to know is it true that 3rd party lens PQ cannot be comparable to Original one ?
