D700 vs 5D Mark II

Hi nikons, i am planning to get a FF before christmas.
With my budget, it is either d700 or 5dm2.
I do not own any lens or body now, so either sides are ok now.

I have google & done some research on-line.
But i think i should ask from nikon side for your good opinions.

You need to ask yourself what you need

-Do you need faster FPS?
-What do you need better focusing for? Are you shooting in very low light? (I'm not sure if the 5Dm2 focusing issue that so many complained about has been fixed since I'm not a Canon user)
-What do you need built-in flash for? It has limited uses and most of the time it will only screw up your shots real bad. Unless you use it as a commander to trigger other external flashes, but do you use that function? If you are looking for snapshot quality pics since the built-in flash will do that, then full frame is not for you, in fact a point and shoot might be a better option
-If you buy FF body to use crop lens, you are doing it wrong
-Megapixels does not mean that much

Of course, nobody can stop you from getting a full frame body, but you have to consider what you will use it for. Full frame bodies are larger and heavier and that may or may not be good, depending on how you use your camera.

Just curious, what cam system were you on previously? From your joined date, you do not seem to be new to photography. For spec, i believe you can go to individual canon and nikon site to view and compare. For price, you can refer to the price guides for both canon and nikon.

If you use the "cheaper" crop lens on ur d700 it will be only abt 5mp(?) because ur are also cropping the area of the sensor that gets used. And unless you are doing sports you dont really need the faster fps! And with FF why would you want built in flash for? You should get an external one or just bump up the iso, thats what FF is good for anyway!

But on the other hand, megapixels is not that important unless you want to do gigantic prints or crop like crazy, and i have no idea about the lens prices .

The best thing to do is to rent both bodies out and try them to see which one your more comfortable with, and decide from there!

I used to own a canon 50D.

I shot for personnal, not for work.
Reason to FF because i like to shoot low light (no/little flash) yet always fast action(1/60)
of my two sons+1 dog. On 50D, i cannot accept IQ with iso above 1600.
Tried Sigma 30/1.4 is v.good, but then dof is v.thin sometimes difficult to aim properly at eye in motion. Having a built-in flash - for emergency use ... when i am lazy to bring an external flash or only go light with body and small prime lens.
I do not need high megapixels as i only print 4R/5R at most, with some minor cropping.
High fps is not a must have, but a camera thats always wait for me is important.
Not a camera that's i have to wait for her to react.
Canon 7D is good, but not FF.

i agreed with the idea of renting both out to try cos any of this is not cheap to me . . .

it is definitely not advisable to use a crop lens in your FF body as it will automatically crop the area of your sensor as stated . . .

If you switch to FF and use fast lens, the DOF will be even thinner. I think your best bet is a crop body with good high ISO capabilities (7D/D7000) coupled with a fast lens and an external flash.

From your questions, it seems that you have made up your mind to buy a D700. D700 is a FF camera but like any other cameras, there are not much differences which will make you choose one over the other. Both Nikon D700 and Canon 5DMk2 are equally good as it has a lower pixel density so it has better noise control. Speed wise, faster fps won't make much of a difference, in fact it can sometimes be a nuisance.

Using a FF camera requires FF lenses. Try using a crop (DX) lens and you will get crappy shots no matter what you try. FF cameras tend to show the imperfections of a crop lens so you might want to think it through.

From the published price list, you know FF lenses are 4x more expensive so if you cannot afford the entire system, you might want to consider either a Nikon D300s or Canon 7D.

D7K is catching up with D700 in terms of iso performance. But.... Iso performance is not everything. If it's really the most important thing for you, then probably only the D3 series can satisfy...

Probably you should go for the 5DII then. There are some excellent Canon Primes that aren't that costly but with excellent quality.

In this case, D3S is your only answer. King of the King of Noise performance.
You could set the aperture at f/2.8 (to avoid the out of focus) but able to boost the ISO level to 3200 - 6400, and the noise level is still acceptable.

However, D700 or 5DM2 is a par in the noise output, I believe.
If you have plan to buy D3S, it's better to switch to Nikon now (either D700 or D3s).

If you are concerned regarding the lower megapixel count ( which probably you shouldn't ), then using cheaper crop lenses means u get an even lower megapixel count since the peripherally will either be vignetted or you crop it off.

No point getting the FF camera solely to use crop lenses.

Yeah agreed. Choose which camera's button location and the menu setting which make sense to you that can let you control more faster and comfortable. That is what you go with. If you already familiar with canon menu setting and system well, then suddenly jump to nikon I think you will be confused. :sweatsm:
