Digital Camera

Hi all the expert here i will need some help from u all ^^ i am quite new to camera. Currently i am interested to buy a digital camera with a budget somewhere around $500, doesn't need to be exactly 500. Most of the time, i am using the camera for general purpose, like taking human pic, nature, night scenery, sky, sunset etc, i don expect a dslr standard but at least maybe can see some detail in it:bsmilie: Brand which i am looking at will be like nikon(??), canon(Ixus?), sony(T series?) and panasonic(Lumix?) megapixel not really that important, and must not be too big thanks in advance ^^

At that price category, all point-and-shoot cameras are decent/about the same. I suggest going to the shops and getting a good "hands on" feel for the cameras to see which one you like best. Then just get that one.

Most cameras in that range have similar specs. The main difference may be the focal length (how much "zoom"). Do take a look at which offers the wider focal length; some PnS cameras start at only 35mm equiv, others 20-24.

U can take a look at the Sony WX5 too. A pure point ad shoot, but a capable one.

Yes, a small and powerful compact camera like this one may suit your needs and budget.
Just check it the AF is fast enough for your purposes.

what is the focal length really about? always saw this when i compare the product (Focal Length (35mm Equivalent)) is it the more the better? it affect optical zoom? how about the shutter speed and the ISO, is it something which i need to take note too?

sony got this really nice function..the panorama..is it gd to use?

hmm..what do u mean by fast enough? like suddenly 1 to take some moving object n take it out from ur pocket n shoot immediately?(sry, only this example came to my mind..haha)

actually i have been to courts n harvey norman but just really don know what to choose, n i think courts is having sale for the camera now.

aww..almost forgot 1 thing, the IS, does it really help? hehe

focal length *is* the "optical zoom".

For shutter speed and ISO, they're all quite similar.

Yes, the sweep panorama is nice, so is the handheld twilight.

IS helps, and all cameras have it.

well if you are taking events, i would advise checking the largest aperture, the maximum iso and shutter speed range of all the pns you are considering.

Brands has nothing to do with quality...

In every brand, there are strong performers, there are weak performers as well. There are more advanced PnS we call prosumers, that allow users a lot of control, there are also very watered down "decide-everything-for-you" type of cameras. There are also models that are very low priced, for the budget market.

So you see, every brand will have different models catering to different segments of the market. Which is good depends on the models themselves, and not the brand.

You're talking about Sony vs Lumix:
I never actually tried their PnS cameras before, but I find that Lumix cameras is more durable in built and system. Sony always gives people problem, thus the image quality isn't that good. That is.... judging by what I see both of them by built and images.
NOTE: Lumix & Sony not as good as Nikon & Canon
