I am using D5000 with stock lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (3.0x).

I am into close-up photography and find the shots still "not sharp enough". I shoot with stand and @ f22 manual focus and VR off.

Will this macro AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR improve the sharpness of my pcitures ?

There is a review here at http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/523-nikkorafsdx85vr saying this lens loses sharpness @ f22

Any one used this lens before and comments ?

usually a lens is the sharpest at 2 stops down, eg. f2.8 stop down becomes f5.6. not sure why u wan to stop down that much, there's too many disadvantages to do so.

try to shoot with ur kit lens at around f7.1, with shutter speed of at least 1/80 and with VR on. the sharpness of this lens should be quite ok.

This set of books I got teaches me to shoot @ f22 to get max field of depth

I used VR off, set to Manual focus and use Expsoure delay-on + remote shuttler control based on the tips there too.

I am taking close-ups of my model tanks, cars, all less than 3 inches long.

Will try f11 if works then ;)

You would definitely need to consider getting a Macro lens if you are into close up.

The 85mm is good, but hardly i shoot at F22... F8 onwards yield good results. Considering the price is only $600+ for new street price :D

Do note that at 1:1 mag ratio, you could use F57!!! :)

Yes.. Anything with that?

Though if ts is generous, do consider the 105 vr. It's a good lens too if not for the weight and hefty price tag

There is nothing wrong to choose f11 or f22 in close-up shoot. Which aperture you choose depend on your own preference, to achieve the DOF effect you prefer to.

Diffraction will soften the image at high f numbers. One should use the focus stacking method to increase DOF for close up.

I'd suggest besides F8 or F11, try comparing between Auto and Manual Focus results.

For MF, are you focusing through Live View? If not, make sure you have adjusted the viewfinder's focus accurately, if you aren't relying on the focus indicator at all.

No, not through LV . Yes manual focus through via finder and when the focus green indicator shows two bar only

just an update, on a D90, focusing from infinity-1:1-infinity takes 5.4s, while on a D700 body it takes 2.1s :lovegrin::lovegrin:

will do a test on D7000/D300s soon..!

AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR has built in motor, will the camera body give much influence in the focusing speed ?
