Fishing with camera

Hi Snappers,
I am planning for a saltwater fishing trip on a boat and was thinking of bring my dslr camera along. Is this advisable? Can i buy protection cover for the cam? (Sony A550 user).

What kind of boat and what kind of fishing are you looking at?

If you are likely to suffer from the sprays of the sea, then it may not be a good idea to bring a DSLR along. The water-proof casing is rather expensive and you'd have to fit it properly. Also it can affect the contacts of your memory cards and even batteries if you had to replace them out in the open.

A simple bag protection is not common in singapore and will require you to have a clear window for your lens to shoot out from.

To be safe, I would suggest that you look for water-proof disposables or getting a water-proof PnS.

I will be fishing from a boat (medium size) so there should not be sprays... i hope.

I am more worried about the salty air. I have a plastic rain dslr protector, would this be sufficient?

Water-proof disposable? Any idea where can i get this in SG?

I remember I brought my cam to some boat trips in Indonesia, somewhere Maluku islands. There was some splash, of course. There was plenty of salty air and whatnot .. but I forgot to tell my camera about it. :dunno: So it worked fine all the time and I have some priceless pictures from this trip.
Worry less, your camera can stand a lot of things. Important is that you wipe it with damp cloth once you are back home. That's it.

Actually, that was what i am thinking of also, whats the point of having a camera and worry about bringing to places to take great snaps... but, will try to scout around for some protection though... hehe.

did a event in the past where my d50 which is not even weather-sealed got drenched with seawater + heavy rain completely. survived and worthwhile, but scary experience :sweatsm:
its still something think twice tho with the risk, but since u won't be having much splashes on medium sized boat, it should be much safer

Shld be ok then if it's above 30ft long...

as long as the skipper does not aggressively back down the boat to chase the big fish. :bsmilie:

There were some from the camera stores (uses film), develope once and it's gone. Even has flash.

Salty air is not a biggie. Just as long as your gear does not get into contact with the salt droplets...

Just don't dunk your camera into the sea water and you will be fine.

im sure you will get better pictures than those using a compact. All you need is protection from sea water. check out ewa-marine. For cheaper solution you might improvise with a rain cover

I think based on my limited kaching resource.... i shall go for the rain cover and will be very very careful not to accidentally jump into the water for underwater shots!!!

yes, I have taken out my camera boating, was shooting a dragonboat from the front. There was much splashing around. Initially I had a ziploc bag to keep out the water, but I couldn't take photos with it on so I just risked it and removed it. The camera was wet but just dried it afterwards, no problem at all!

your camera is tougher than it looks. just take precautions changing lenses. wipe it down with water at the end of the day or so.

Actually, it has been done before. With a compact cam though.

just remember that saltwater is actually very corrosive if you allow contact. I recalled a CF card test for the Sandisk extreme and the only time it failed was when it was dunked into saltwater. (It didn't fail immediately though, approx some time was taken for it to corrode)
