Hi all,

I am new to dslr and i am thinking of getting filters..

My friends recommend me that i get 77mm filters and just use adapter rings to step up.

May i know how it works? Means if got ring 52mm can hold 77mm filters? and how does the step up work anyway?
Is it like one ring can step up 3mm, hence from 52 - 77 i need to buy 5 step up rings?

One more thing to ask.. haha, just making clarification before purchase.

http://www.artworkfoto.com/ndcplspecial_effect.html

I found the bundled set here, which says "any size adapter ring from 52mm-77mm".

Meaning to say, if i get from there, they will give me all the adapter rings?

I think choose one. But you can check again with mike

the purpose of these rings are there so that you can use a 77mm filter on a lens with a smaller thread size like 72mm.
So, in this case, you will asking the salesman for a 77 to 72 adapter ring.
Not so sure if there is a 77 to 52 one.

I'm also thinking it's only 1, just msg mike, the number is on the website, he replies quite fast

Thanks for all your replies!
Yah i think that there are so many step up rings and its so confusing. I think the eBay one looks good since they give all the possible permutations. I have some fiters that are 62mm too.. and my lens comes in different sizes so i think the eBay ones are good.

Then how about most of you? Do you guys get step up rings and stick to one size of filter?

how many lens do you have?
yes. get a nd filter for the lens with the largest thread size in your lens collections and use the ring for the filter to fit onto the lens with smaller thread size. usually one adapter per lens since they are cheap.

PS. if you are talking about uv filter for protection of your lens, just get the right size for each lens.

i have five lens now. most are prime, that is 52mm, but i got a 77mm one that is out of the line..

Also i have 62mm filters which my dad gave me.

Odd combination..

and yes, i have an uncle who owns a studio so i borrow lens from him very frequently. I guess i may need the whole bundle listed on the ebay site, but hope mike's bundled package can give me all the permutations.

just curious, what filters are you using?

i have soft filter for potraits and cross.

Now i need to get nd filters and cpl..

Just a note: It's possible that you won't be able to use some of the lens hoods on your lenses with smaller diameter due to the size of your filter.

oh yah! that didn't really cross my mind.

And you know what all these filters do right? And when to use them?

No need to stock all filters like ammo. Buy only what you need.

I am experiencing it too as a newbie! Controlling myself to a CPL and macro/wide converter for starters. Should be alright right? Must.Avoid.Further.Temptation.

macro/wide converter for starters.

DO NOT, I say again DO NOT buy any wide angle converter. Most are rip offs.

For macro, only go for Raynox DCR-250 and nothings else. If you need ultra wide angle, just get a real UWA lens like Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 11-16.
