it send shudders down my spine when I think of one boxing day (one day after christmas) on Phuket island...

Be sure to get all the proper insurance coverage.

Generally, most people working in the tourist industry is able to speak English.
Be sure to book for at least a whole day island hopping trip and check around for best deal. (island include Phi Phi island)

ps. last but not least, learn to read signs of impending tsunami...

hotel :
boomerang village

sea trip:
simba sea tour

Thanks for the recommendation!

:( I know....Tsunami...Sad. Not sure if there are gg to be any remembrance day or something....

if you have a bike licence and have decent riding experience, you can rent a bike to explore the many beaches on the island at your own sweet time.

Just a note of caution, the roads are somewhat different from sg. There certain parts with steep and winding incline...

Thnks coolthought! Unfortunately, I do not have a bike license...

Might want to check out this place called Promthep Cape. Fabulous sight for sunset located at the southern tip of Phuket. Unblocked view of the Indian Ocean. :)

You are going smack in the peak of the high season, so forget a 'good' price for hotels etc...

Low season from April to Oct is when you get super deals. At some places almost 50% less.

Go do a search on the net and you will find many small hotels that are a lot cheaper then the bigger well known names.

Patong is where the night life and shopping is but the hotel prices are also more ex. North and South of Patong is a lot cheaper.

Unfortunately you don't have a bike license cause that's the easiest way to get around( cheaper too). Traffic is decent except nearer to Phuket town. Cops are not as bad as Indo. 100B usually settles any issues unless you hit someone.

Hi, you don't need a licence to ride a bike there, although if that's the case, try to stick to the smaller roads and avoid the highway, you'll be surprised by the insights you get if you rent a bike (i think about 200 Bht per hr?)

Hotels wise, its peak season from Nov onwards and expect prices to be jacked up by almost 50%. Check out www.sawadee.com, one of the largest hotel operators in Thailand and from there, a good selection of hotels.

Tours wise, you'll find no end to the tour operators along the streets of Patong (and other parts of Phuket). You can usually get up to 50% discount from the quoted rate during off peak season, but at peak, its usually a pretty standard price.

If you can, get a long tail boat (1800-2000 Bht?) to bring you out to Bamboo Island. For me, its the only place left that's relatively unspoilt and a beautiful place for a picnic lunch. (Note: There are no accommodations on this island) Pay the boatman half of the agreed price and the balance upon return. Even if he doesn't come back to pick u up, you can always ride on the other boats that stop by this island.

Food wise, is relatively cheap (50-60 Bht for a Khao Pad / Friend Rice). Best fried rice and green curry i had in my life was at Phi Phi island, although the beaches there are severely overrated and its pretty much a hippies paradise with sex, drugs and touristy prices. But it's worth at least a check out if you're going with your better half.

Have fun! :)

"pretty much a hippies paradise with sex, drugs and touristy prices." Wow! Didn't know drugs are still widely available?

The Thai government takes a very strong stance against drugs and unless you go looking for it or are in some seedy joint, chances of being offered or sold drugs is not an issue. Many a time some innocent tourist gets caught in the same old scam. You are offered cheap drugs, and after the buy you get 'busted', you are offered to be released after paying a hefty bribe. Some corrupted cops work with dealers to make a quick buck.

Bike rental should set you back no more then S$10 - $15 a day if you take it for a couple of days. Theft/accident insurance is a must.

From personal experience, you don't need any licence to rent a bike. However, there are police road block. They will ask to look at your licence and check if you and pillion are wearing a crash helmet. I have no idea what they will do with you if you are caught not having these.

As with any road with traffic in anywhere, it is always better to have some riding experience. It is your life and limb that will be on the line if you can't handle the bike properly and don't know how to interact with other traffic.

Thanks Treetrunk! I did some reasearch and saw some fab reviews on this place as well! However, it seems pretty far from patong beach...:dunno: Anyways, I've written to the recommended tour operator above, am just waiting to hear from them! :)

Thanks astroboy, I'm not expecting any good pricing though as it is the holiday and merry-makers season! :) Maybe i shld start to learn riding a bike....any volunteers? lol

A friend of mine got caught. He didnt have his passport with him and was told to return to the hotel whilst his wife waited for him at the market. In the end, he was told to pay a fine S$50 i think...lol

But still, i wouldnt wnt to take the chance and spoil my holiday!

If you can drive, rent a small Suzuki jeep. It's not expensive and drive yourself around the island.

The cape in the South is not far from Patong. Drive via the West side passing Kata, Karon etc... It's a easy drive and the traffic is light. It is a lot easier to drive in Phuket compared to Bali.

You can get a simple map from many of the tourist booths or hotel and it will be sufficient to find you way around.

I rent a Avanza for 50 SGD/day there.

Big Buddha is a good place to take photo, somewhere in the southern part of phuket also.

Need advise on how to get to Patong beach hotels from Airport... read a couple of threads on google-search and I am now confused..
