Hi All.

What is stepping?
Sometimes I hear people say, "that photo has good stepping" ?
Or what is a step?

thanks!
I'm missing something basic

Good question. I don't know what stepping is. This is the first time I've heard of it. I would like to know what "stepping" is too.

stepping.....

place the photos on the floor,
pull your body weight on the stronger leg,
rise the other feet,
step on the photos as hard as you like.... :)

Let me join in this thread to stay tuned to understand what "stepping" is... never heard this word used in this context before ;p

I think it's about camera lens stepping rings.

But you just said that you heard people saying "This photo has good stepping"...

huh>??????? I just lost you. :dunno::confused::think:

Its called step up/down ring dude!!!

you should ask there and then,

anyway, possible and closer meaning could be the tonal steps
I was thinking along those lines too... but if there are 'steps', isn't that not so pleasing...? Some people call it banding or posterization, am I right?

The closer i can think of is "stop" a lettle away from "step" =)

Filter Name F-Stop Reduction % of Light Transmitted

ND2 has an F-Stop Reduction of 1 which means 50% of the light gets through
ND4 has an F-Stop Reduction of 2 which means 25% of the light gets through
ND8 has an F-Stop Reduction of 3 which means 12.5% of the light gets through
ND64 has an F-Stop Reduction of 6 which means 1.56% of the light gets through
ND1000 has an F-Stop Reduction of 10 which means .1% of the light gets through

Izzit? lolx, just trying to help

it is not a really having steps, but rich in tonal range, like in shadow areas is not block up, and also highlight area not white wash, still able to see detail in it.

but then it doesn't fit into the context of this sentence "....this photo has good stepping..."

maybe it's a photo of someone stepping on something? ;p

Thanks,
This makes more sense :)
It can also mean tonal steps like another said.

I think whoever said that has ZERO knowledge of photography and was just trying to sound cheem by dropping a phrase that they thought applies.

You said sometimes you hear people mention "this photo has good stepping". Care to share who these people are?

Besides the amusing possibilities that someone is trying to act smart, "stepping" could be a casual term whoever these person/people use to describe something else, but is not a photographic term.
