Rashkae: perhaps it is wrong to assume that people can read between the lines but i hoped that this would start some interesting thread on this topic. Of course, I can google it or whatever but it is much more constructive to talk to people who are passionate about the topic and are willing to share what they know. By the way, it's not homework of any kind I simply would like to know what is in fashion now...

By the way, have you heard about Andrzej Dragan? Here is the link to his web page http://andrzejdragan.com/

I think he is quite successful in what he is doing and he was called by some critics as new Rembrandt. I, personally, don't know what to think about his work.

I personally think, FINE ART, is you have to express yourself thru your art,
you can see some works by others to get inspiration, but not a recopy of others' work.
Not following a trend.
Not doing a "IN" thing.

Your arts must show your own vision, your statement, your interpretation of your subjects.

what do i think of his work? i think he uses it well. there is a certain style about it, that brings out something more than what we see on the surface. it could be that he stresses the weathering (and therefore, history) on the person's face. it could be the dark mood that seems to pervade every picture he showcases.

i had heard of the dragan effect long before, but it was only a while back when he won one of the uk photo magazine's POTY award, with another picture of this persona:

i don't think he seeks to bring out beauty, but he does, in a very interesting way. that photo (not the one i linked, i can't find the one in the competition) is one of my favourite photographs in the portraiture genre, very memorable. maybe it's just me, but it seems to say a lot more about the person in the picture than the usual modelling photos - just the look, the state her body is in... all these tell a story, and one wants to find out, and one does.

and you must shoot something you really like. like to shoot, anyways.

i think that is at the very least, a common trait, from what i've seen... for all the successful fine art photographers. they work at whatever they work at with a fierce passion.
