Hi,

i have received a photo assignment to photograph Indian Wedding.
I believe the couple is tamil.

Can anyone share the key moments in an Indian wedding?

thanks in advance.:)

i done one indian wedding as a backup photographer a few weeks back.

there is mainly 2 types of wedding. the northern and southern indian wedding.

the most important moment is when the bride and bridegroom exchanges "thali" (not sure if correct spelling).

usually it begins like this (from my memory which i checked with an indian colleague):

- the bridegroom will arrive at the temple first. then proceed to do some prayers then he will be given some clothing to go to a special room and change while waiting for the bride to come
- the bride arrives and do some prayer and is given some clothing to change in another room. At this point both dun meet yet
- the bridegroom will come out now and wait for the bride to come out also then they will do prayers and be blessed by the priest
- the bride and bridegroom will now then exchange "thali" then all the guest will come on the stage to give their blessings to the couple

the above is summarised version from what i remembered :p feel free to ask any of your indian friends, they should be able to help you understand better.

but some indian weddings may do some shortcuts and skip some process. so you need to check with the couple for the exact details.

Yep, you'd have to ask them for the program/schedule. It depends on their religion and family background. All the 4 Indian weddings I have done is non-traditional more westernised type, and all got dance until nobody's biz. :bsmilie:

The best/most interesting is that I have done a Ghanian (African) - Indian wedding here and Africa.

I have been doing my research on Indian Weddings and I find it one of the most interesting wedding from a photography point of view.

the colours, the activities are all so meaningful.

thanks everyone for the information.

Yes, the couple know the flow the best because some couples might ammend the programs. And if you are still not so confident on it, ask the couple to assign a "guide" throughout your shooting process.

EXACTLY. But too bad that the lightings were not very good at the dance floor in my cases, else you will easily get some good candid shots... Watch out for some old aunties who will dance till they are going to pengsan.

Hi,

I believe the couple is tamil.

I think is Hindi.

bro, i may be wrong but tamil and hindi is a language.

Best is of course to ask any of your frens who are of the same religion. Get someoen to talk you through the important (not to be missed) moments. And some dos and don'ts during the ceremony. And of course some info thats already been shared here.

Good Luck

I think tamil can be used to decribe both the ethnic group and language.... like "tamil language" and "tamils".

Hindi should be the language itself. Hindu is the religion or adherents to the hindu religion.

Most unforgettable part of indian wedding is the dance for sure... Last time I shot a sikh wedding, I felt for a few seconds that I was being featured as an extra in a Bollywood film. The feel is really surreal.
