Buy which camera body

Dear All,

newbies here and need some advise. I am older newbies and are looking at what is the best DSLR body to purchase. presently I use to take moving subject which is my priority and protrait is out for me.
looking at Nikon D300s or Alpha A55 .....Which to buy as now using D90.

They are in different leagues, but if you want to upgrade a camera body, you should look at cameras in higher leagues, unless the tech in your camera in seriously outdated, in which case you may look at bodies at the same league. So either just get better lenses, or get the D300s or its replacement.

since you are using D90 and i presume you are having some lens with you . . . you may wish to look at D300s seriously as you can utilise the existing lens.

Anyway, D7000 is coming soon, so maybe you wish to wait a little longer for it to appear in a month or 2.

As what Brabodam suggested, you may wish to look at additional lens instead of body . . . D90 is still very good.

your D90 can't capture moving subjects?
Unless you say that you've maxed out the camera's burst speed and AF tracking and still can't get a decent shot...

It's not D90 unable to get a descent shot, agreed that it's a good cam in it class whereby
D90 specs infact are the same as D300s except 4.5fps vs 7fps ,alloy body vs plastic and dual memories slot for video, I don't shoot video so not a concern.


As I have got a sony 500mm mirror lens too, wonder the 10fps offer by Alpha A55 will be better for flying subject? Again, I do not know actually how good is the Sony compare to Nikon in-term of noise at higher ISO (1600 etc).

Nikon uses Sony sensors, so ISO performence is quite similar. In fact, the A55 body uses a newer sensor technology than the D90.

But you really really need to test the bodies. The D300s is a larger body, good for big hands. The A55 is very small, it's designed to be very compact.

It really depends on what you feel is limiting you in the d90, so you know what to look out for in your next 'upgrade'.
For example, if you switch from D90 to D300s looking for better high ISO performance, then the difference (if there is one) will be minimal, and you might be disappointed.

So it all depends.

D300s and A55 are totally in different leagues. Do read up on what both camera has to offer.


AF speed, ISO, colour rendering and practically everything else.. the A55 wins the D90 hands down so it would be a massive upgrade for you at a simillar price of the latter.


A split choice between the A55 and the D7000 would be interesting.

yes..buy what you need.. my a550 have 7FPS. but since i don't shoot sports, i never used the 7FPS before.. only use at times to hear the awesome sound

D3s is the only way to go.

After awhile, you'll get over the excitement of the 10fps and discover the real gem in the A55 is really it's AF speed, No point having 20fps camera but the camera can't AF fast enough to even give you 2 out of 20 shots thats usable. I'm averaging a 80% usability hit ratio on 10fps with my A55 and the 20% rejects(due to OOF or framing) are due to my slow reactions and shaky hands.

Currently, I have not been able to find another camera in the same price cat that can match the A55 in:

1) AF speed (and yes, the 10fps too)
2) Low light shooting without any form of flash, IR, Beam AF assistance.
3) Smoothness of AF-C when shooting HD video.
4) ISO-25600 (Okay, so it cheats abit by using Multi frame NR):bsmilie:
5) 100% EVF (Closest is the G2 but Sony's better, maybe the GH2 would be different)

Thanks for englighten me on the actual performance of A55, so I'm fixed.
I will pick it up and use it with me present 500mm Sony mirror lens and I think the result must be better than my present Nikon D90 + 70 300mm S VR ED Lens.
