I tried asking those at vrzone and hwz to no avail. Maybe since you guys are gadget-savvy, you guys can recommend me a netbook/notebook.

I urgently need to buy a new netbook/notebook, as I am required to bring it to school next week and my 5 years old Dell Inspiron looks dilapidated. I really feel it is time to change since I am in need to entertain myself during my daily 1 hour mrt ride.

I am looking for a notebook with such specs:

- portable
- sufficient RAM/ memory for graphics/photos editing (using Corel Paintshop Pro)
- I do not play games so there is no need for one with superspecs for gamings.
- Most of my works are done online so i don't think space matters much.
- Budget : 400-699 (hehe )

Can some kind souls recommend me a netbook or notebook with such simple requirements? Thank you in advance.

Acer has a few netbook which is quite cheap.

i don't know how capable or resource hungry corel paintshop pro is... but as a general rule of thumb , for image editing, the more ram, the better.

windows 7 is a smaller resource hog than vista, so 4gb ram will be fine if you don't open large files (e.g. panoramas).

processor wise, you really shouldn't be looking at the atom type processor that most netbooks sport. suggest at least a i3, or even a i5. dell has amd processor notebooks which might be slightly cheaper than the intel counterparts which you can look at.

you don't game, photoshop doesn't involve graphics card , really... so you don't need any form of graphics card to be honest.

400-699, you should be looking at the old general notebook i guess.............. new generation notebooks would not cost that little, brand new anyways.

Toshiba - should be < $600. For netbook, I will look how long the batt will last per charge, if I am not wrong, Toshiba is ~9 hours. For the memory, maybe is 1GB, but no worry, just drop by sim lim or funan to get a 2GB dimm, maybe ~30-40. HDD should at least be 160GB or 250GB.

Acer? I have one, so far so good lah...

last i remembered, acer seemed to have serious overheating problems - a year ago i touched the bottom of my cousin's acer laptop when it had barely been operating for half an hour and it was really too hot for comfort.

i have also heard that their competitive prices are a result of their skimping on motherboard quality. but that's hearsay, of course.

That's why I did not recommend Acer mah:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

thanks guys, i totally forgot about this thread.

i am actually looking at the Asus series. Look pretty worthy judging by the reviews.

Aluminum macs also get insanely hot, plus you get the bonus "tingling" effect to boot when you touch them. ;)

for photo editing, you need a nice processor speed and GPU.. netbook is not suitable for the job.. i prefer a notebook with at least 512M GPU , 2G DDR3, and Intel I3 or I5..

asus Eee PC 1015PEM cheap only $599 with usb 3, Intel® Atom™ N550 dual core processor

There is an MSI roadshow going on at Funan atrium right now.

Man....Laptops are so cheap these days....cheaper than IPADs i guess

Do note that most photo editing softwares are more CPU-bound than GPU-bound so a fast GPU rarely helps.
Try not to get those older-gen Intel processors (i.e Pentium Dual core, Atoms or the super low voltage ones (SU-series) as they are not as efficient as the newer i3/i5s.
Go for DDR3 instead of DDR2 as well.

any recommended place for buying laptop in Singapore?
