Outbreak Notice
Rabies in Bali, Indonesia
This information is current as of today, September 24, 2010 at 12:18 EDT

Updated: March 29, 2010

In December 2008, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture notified the World Organization for Animal Health about a rabies outbreak in dogs on the island of Bali, Indonesia. As of November 2009, the Indonesia Ministry of Health has reported 15 deaths caused by rabies on Bali. Most human and animal rabies cases have been confirmed near popular tourist destinations on the southern tip of Bali. However, because the situation is evolving, CDC advises travelers to take precaution on the entire island.

The following activities may put travelers to Bali at higher risk for rabies:

* Working closely with animals of unknown rabies exposure or vaccination history.
* Spending a lot of time in a rural area or participating in outdoor activities such as bicycling, camping, or hiking. These activities increase the risk for coming in contact with animals.
* Touching or playing with animals.
* Adopting animals with the intention of bringing them home to the United States.

Information about Rabies

A threat to both human and animal health, rabies is a rapidly progressing, deadly disease. It is almost always spread by an animal bite but can also be spread when a rabid animal’s saliva gets directly into the eyes, nose, mouth, or broken skin. The primary sources of human infection worldwide are dogs and certain wildlife species, such as foxes, raccoons, mongooses, and bats.

Each year throughout the world, rabies kills approximately 50,000 people, mostly children. The risk of rabies from domestic animals is low for people in the United States. For people who travel to other parts of the world, the risk of rabies may be higher. Therefore, all travelers should know how to protect themselves from this disease.
Advice for Travelers

Follow these recommendations to protect you and your family from rabies:
Consider rabies vaccine.

* If your activities in Bali will bring you into contact with animals such as dogs, cats, bats, or other carnivores, you should consider pre-exposure rabies vaccination, which is a three-shot series (days 0, 7, and 21 or 28) given before travel.
* Even if you receive pre-exposure vaccination, you will still need immediate medical treatment if you are bitten or scratched by an animal.

Avoid animal bites.

* Avoid touching all animals, including wild animals and pets. Pets in other countries may not have been vaccinated against rabies.
* Resist the urge to rescue animals with the intent to bring them home to the United States. Dogs and cats may be infected with rabies but not show signs until several days or weeks after you first encounter them.
* Supervise children closely, especially around dogs, cats, and wildlife such as monkeys. This is important since children are more likely to be bitten by animals, may not report the bite, and may have more severe injuries from animal bites.
* If you are traveling with your pet, supervise your pet closely and do not allow it to play with local animals, especially strays.

Act quickly if an animal bites or scratches you.

* Wash the wound well with soap and water.
* See a doctor right away, even if you don’t feel sick or your wound is not serious. To prevent rabies, you may need to start a series of vaccinations immediately.
* To get vaccinated, be prepared to travel back to the United States or to another area. (Adequate vaccination for exposure to rabies is not available in all parts of the world.)
* After you return home, tell your doctor or state health department that you were bitten or scratched during travel.

Before your trip, find out if your health insurance covers health care overseas and medical evacuation. If it does not, consider buying supplemental health insurance for your trip.

U don't read the dailies? It's been on alert for some time already.

I heard of the same news before my trip to Bali early last month. Two things I can tell you:

1. I do not know how much truth there is in this news.
2. Life was normal when I was there :) Stray dogs are abundant in the streets of Bali. But I did not encounter any rabies infected during my 9-day trip. I checked with my local tour guide re the news and he said it's all the name of political games. Again, not too sure bout the truth on this one.

If you are worried... well, quite frankly I think you will forget about it once you are there :D And you should be more wary of the Uluwatu monkeys :p

Happy travels!

If you are going to Bali & are concerned, you can go to Tan Tock Seng Hospital to get the jabs.

When visiting Uluwatu, just keep your belongings secure. For ladies, remove your hair clips. For all, remove glasses. These two articles are particularly prone to "monkey snatch". In general, keep anything shiny/reflective to be safe. At least, this is what I've been told :D

Itinerary sounds good. I would stay longer in Ubud and less Kuta. But it depends on what you like. I don't really fancy staying near the pubs/bars. If you're adventurous, hiring a scooter may be fun. Roads in Bali are not easy to remember though, so getting lost is very likely :D You might end up wasting time trying to figure out your way to places to visit. This is how I look at it at least :) The choice is yours nonetheless.

Most of the places to visit are spread out in Bali. Making your base in one place isn't exactly recommended. It's best to move around as you venture into different places. Will definitely save you time, you will be able to see more eventually :)

I would skip Besakih. Yes, it is the mother temple and it's beautiful (Well, after seeing it a few times, it's ok for me to miss it now. Nothing really special). Anyway the only reason I would not recommend it is because the local tour guides will rip you off. I was actually warned by my driver before heading there but still ended up there (my friend wanted to see it). Apparently there have been cases where tourists don't feel happy of the fees they are paying, and disputes have occurred before. The last time I went there, it was late and not many tourists were around. According to my driver, even tour agents don't want to bring their tour groups there anymore to avoid complaints (unless the groups specifically requested for a visit). Again, this is my personal experience. The choice is yours. There are plenty of other amazing temples around to see.

Hope this helps. Enjoy Bali! It's one of my fave places :)

foxwagon,
thanks! any idea how are the charges are like. I tried to check their website but it leads me no where
according to what i read, the pre-exposure rabies vaccination, simplify the treatment as you only needs 2 ~ 3 post-exposure after that. for those without pre-exposure will need to undergo 5 ~ 6 jabs

shutterbux,
thanks for your tips. i wanted in base in ubud actually but couldn't not get my prefer accomodation there. hence for convenient sake, i had booked kuta first and continue my hunt over there. it's my first trip there, so i decide not to move around for now, perhaps another trip once I get in tune to beat of bali better :)

uluwatu ... hmm actually more interested of the beautiful cliffs there. I would skip if necessary ... i think tanah lot will be nicer?
Besakih ... will see circumstances, thanks for your heads up on this
scooter rental ... again need to see. probably engage driver for first few days. read about corrupt police, scooter theft ... so this another risk to consider

how I could get a reliable driver (probably from kuta / ubud)? what's the approx charges per day (i think they charge by 8hrs?) thanks!

I wouldn't skip Uluwatu for anything :) The feeling on the tall cliffs with the sun setting as you face the open Indian Sea, it's surreal! Yes Tanah Lot is nice too. My suggestion is to not skip these two :D

Would strongly recommend his service: http://funwithsila.blogspot.com/

Rates are all in the website. You can try contacting him and nego the package. Reviews are all there for you to read as well.

All the best :)

both uluwatu and tanah lot not bad but the monkeys in uluwatu really quite frustrating. they are trained by those touts and you have to give them some money to free your belongings. really irritating.

tanah lot sunset is nice.

won't really recommend jimbaran.

i think $350,000 rupiah a day is arnd the avg rate. won't differ much from this rate.

You can get rabies in Singapore too.......

And please note.... rabies is not only carried by dogs.............. monkeys, bats, rats, squirrels and other wild life are potential carriers as well

For dogs, I have seen a few during my travels over the years......... almost always foaming or saliva dripping excessively from mouth.....dunno if its a trait...... it is always alone or chasing other dogs agressively ..... constantly agressive without being provoked.... just stay away and DO NOT try to play sympathetic animal lover with an extended hand of friendship...

You do not need to be bitten to contract rabies........... contact with saliva is a common mode of transmission

Google up how to address rabies when you suspect infection ...... get immunized if you need comfort

Amazing Bali...fantastic, i just went there on the July 2010, so far its still under local goverment control about the Rabies...like all we know that Tourism is the mose selling Income for the Bali peoples so they Must & Have to do everything they can to protect the tourist:thumbsup:

Declan79,
yeah I guess i read too much, and worry too much lor LOLz
contrary to what i read, there weren't much street dogs when I was there.
that said, the dogs really aren't well cared for in bali, but i understand there is an ongoing adoption drive, so hopefully this should help these poor homeless dogs
