Hi, i'm newbie looking for a camera, after a few days of scouting around and I've narrow down to 2 cameras. Sony Nex-5 and the Pentex K-x. I don't know which to get! Help! Need some good advice from the gurus here.....

Have you actually tried both? They are VERY different. The NEX 5 is small and designed to work as simply as a point and shoot, while the K-X is more of a "full" DSLR.

I suggest you consider an A33 or A55 if you want a DSLR.

Urm... sorry, I thought A33 or A55 is REALLY NOT REALLY a DSLR? :D K-X is the REAL DSLR here...

More of a SLT (Single Lens Translucent) than SLR (Single Lens Reflex) that is.... Technically NEX3/5 and A33/A55 are hybrids? Right?

On a side note, yes A33/A55 is really worth considering if you're for the Sony platform as they should be able to use Sony's current range of DSLR lenses, or even Minolta's? Correct me if I'm wrong here...

Since TS have already narrow down to NEX-5 and Pentax K-x, why still bombard TS with other camera? :dunno:

I definitely chose the K-x.

Simple to use, very little navigation button
Produce great picture

I personally used the K-x and it is  even in program mode. (Just got it not long ago and still learning).

Plus point = can chose color

Firstly... TS is new to DSLRs cameras - so he might not be aware of A33/A55's existence... We're just widening his options a bit - in case he missed it. Bombardment? Please don't blow it out of proportion.

No hard feelings bro;)

I'm not blowing it out or anything, just that TS stated that he have been looking around, so i just assume that he is aware of them.

I was once in the same situation as TS and ya, having narrow down and then widen up then down then up, headache wor:bsmilie:

Anyway, like i say, dun feel offended anywhere ;)

None taken. Better headache now than to purchase too early... A33/A55 is very new... arrived on our shores I think one to two weeks before? I'm not sure, Raskae should be more familiar than me, he is an Alpha user.

you are exchanging size, portability and weight, for selection of lenses.

both cameras are capable. i do prefer a VF to LCD anytime though. :)

Well it's a lot more "DSLR" than the NEX, especially in terms of user interface, manual options and handling. :)

NEX is mirrorless, so it's not even a hybrid. :)

Correct. Plus, you get fast AF in video, fast AF in live view, you get tilt/horizon indicators, actual focus points you can see (the KX doesn't) and sweep panorama, handheld twlilight, built-in HDR...

the NEX and the k-x are totally different types of camera.

NEX is a compact camera with DSLR sensor, but its still considered as a compact camera in every way.

k-x is a DSLR.

U can look out for the Sony A33 though, its a totally new type of "DSLR". Go to any Sony style shops and play with it then decide.

BTW if u wish to use video in ur DSLR, then the A33 is the best you can get.

Kx:
1. For the pleasure of using optical viewfinder, no lag in live view refresh rate. Better for action n fast moving subjects, more assurance in capturing "the moment". Makes you feel more confident that you've got the shot in ur bag.
2. Pentax optics n color processing is impressive!

NEX:
1. Not much smaller than Kx
2. ergonomics: Hard to hold in ur hands, easily depress menu button by accident
3. AF is less reliable than Kx
4. Very limited type of AF lenses currently

It really depends on what you're after. The sweep panaromic feature? Mounting M-mount Leica lenses via adapters on the NEX? It's HD video? It's slightly smaller size? Preference to Live View shooting? You've gotta know what you really want.

LOL. Only list the Pentax pros, none of the cons, eh? Let's balance it out:

Kx:
1. Optical viewfinder, but NO AF POINTS in the viewfinder. You need to learn how to focus without that assist.
2. Pentax optics n color processing is on par with the others.

NEX:
1. Quite a bit smaller than KX
2. ergonomics: easy to hold, easy to carry. Flip-out LCD is great for overhead/low shots.
3. AF is quite fast and accurate, and you can see what you are focusing on (unlike the KX)
4. As a new system, there are few lenses now, but many many more coming from what we can see at photokina, as well as using all minolta/Sony lenses with an adaptor with AF for SAM/SSM lenses.
5. Face detect and smile shutter
6. Sweep panorama with 3D support
7. Handheld twilight, DRO and HDR

There are always 2 sides to every story...

If you want the best of both, go for an A33/A55.

Plus you can try those Sony cameras until you tired at any Sony Style stores.

Just pick up a display set and try it, no obligation.

NEX and Kx are 2 different type of systems.

Kx
==
1. Optical viewfinder for no lag between viewfinder and lens
2. Very good jpeg high ISO NR
3. Backwards compatible to all Pentax K-mount lens
4. On camera SR
5. Main con -no AF point indicator in viewfinder, but there are AF marks and a focus confirmation in the viewfinder itself.
6. Relatively loud mirror flap sound (if that is a concern)

NEX
===
1. Smaller body and nice small form factor if you couple it with small primes. Attach the largish ones and well ....... you can check out the ads where the hand holds the lens and not the camera.
2. Electronic viewfinder. Almost WYSIWYG in terms of what you see on the viewfinder to what you will get at pressing the shutter. There is a refresh rate between what the lens sees and what the viewfinder displays (still considered fast, but YMMV, so try this out in a shop). Dark conditions will look brighter and very bright conditions can look dimmer through an electronic viewfinder (can be a pro to some can be a very bad thing to others; as said go try one 1st)
3. A considerable bit of menu diving.

Both are fully capable of taking good pictures.
If you want small, go for the NEX (remember to keep to small primes to keep the form factor).
If you want an optical viewfinder and less menu diving, the Kx would be better.

If you want 'smallish' and less menu diving, look at the A33,A55, Samsung NX10.
Just note the high NR applied for JPEG on the A33,A55 (but RAW is fine)

Hi,
All I can say is that, it is really up to the user. What u really want. Compare & weigh both the pros & cons of the narrowed choices. The Kx is a good performer in low ISO, backward compatible with all pentax lenses, more DSLR like while the Nex-5 is smaller, pns style with interchangeable lens like DSLR. Pricing also plays apart in choosing a camera. How deepr r u going into photography? Casual shooter? As a profession? This is a type of investment in a camera system. If u have moolah $$ by all means, get both :) Both camera r good in their own rights. I own a sony f505, been serving me well but the price was steep. Now, I own a K-7. Been loving it eversince. Battery lifeis great. Took it to japan during winter & battery last the whole day out in thefield. Real life test. I vouch that K-7 is an awesome camera I've ever own. I'm not biased in anyway, just sharing my personal experience on K-7.

Nex-5 is a good, simple, pns with DSLR capability. Battery and memory storage, might just be something to think or look into before purchase. U should try both, before making any decision. Lastly, what ever ur decision is, u must be happy & content with ur purchase.

see what you use it for.

NEX camera, easier to sneak into Jay Chou concert for example. Smaller then even the Olympus Pen if not wrong.

however with the above example, if you can guarantee always get front seating..the S95 or LX5 might actually be better if you dont really intend to invest in a dslr system.

nowadays compact pns are pretty formidable even in lowlight.

Pentax. I don't really like the handling of the NEX.

since the new k-r is here, the k-r should be a better choice.

And uses the A55 sensor too. :)

Ermm, Bro, the new 'top of the line' Pentax K-5 has the same sensor as the A55. .

The K-7 and Nex uses the same 14mp sensors as the A33 (the shortage of which is causing the delay of the A560);)

The K-r and K-x has the same sensor as used in Sony's A500.

Ah, that's right, misread the R and 5. I was sleepy. :(
