vitacon uv filter. kena con?

i was looking for a uv filter today at sim lim square and was rushing for time. so i just walked into a shop (shan't say which one as for now) and asked for a 52mm uv filter. the guy told me 35 bucks. i asked for lower and he said since im the first customer of the day, 25.

it was a 'vitacon' filter and he started saying how good the brand was, cause i was expecting a hoya or something to be the more commonplace filters. bought it and left after awhile

now at home after opening the filter i realised
1) the package is not sealed
2) there's fingerprints on the filter. why are there fingerprints on a supposedly new filter??
3) there's a small chip in the glass in the corner which really shocked me.

googling 'vitacon' gave no results as to what the company was about or what. this is getting more and more suspicious and at the same time, i feel very conned that i paid 25 for a used and chipped unknown branded filter

advice please?

yes... u were overcharged for the 52mm uv filter. Vitacon is not a reputable brand... hmm... maybe that it why it is called "vital-con".

anyway... there is nothing much you can do about it now... just remember to do homework before going out to buy the next time, and dun sidetrack from what you have researched, esp. when u do not know the actual price of any item introduced to you.

sim lim.....i try to avoid that place nowadays...unless you know a reputable shop there or else my advice is avoid it

i did my homework for the other things i bought today but guess this was an impulse buy. sorta spoils my mood cause i thought i got quite a nice bargain on the other items

yes u got conned, vitacon is not a popular brand compared to hoya and B&W, mostly that cost u S$15-20 sealed the most, it's ok, small purchase anyway, at least u know now that shop is not good to buy from

You can try to change a new filter with them since there's a chip on it, whether they change it for you is up to your luck. If you are thinking of a refund, forget about it, its near impossible.

Why you did not check the filter at the shop? If you did, slim chance you will get a refund as it left the shop.

hey guys thanks for all the replies. i went to the shop a few days ago to change the filter. after making alot of noise they finally allowed me to change. the replacement had large silver scratches on the black ring. after more noise was i only finally given an okay one. optically i think the glass quality sucks as i can see imperfections on the surface. feel very conned. non of the filters were sealed. wont be going back to that shop anytime soon. not sure if im allowed to post the shop name here: cameratalk - sim lim square level 2 near the escalator. if it's not allowed mod can help remove this post or what thanks!

That shop tried to sell my friend some wide-angle converter for S$600++ for a Canon Ixus. Luckily he didn't buy it.

Anyway just be glad your loss is comparatively trivial, just take it as a lesson.

Wow.. didn't know that even locals fall for this 'first customer of the day' crap.
Please tell us which shop (although every shop except Orient Photo on 6th floor) can safely be avoided.). There is nothing wrong with naming the shop. But I guess.. it was around 2nd floor. There are a few 'infamous' ones there.

hahha goodness. i knew sim lim was not bad for its computer parts, always go there to get them. but i didnt know the camera business there was so bad :O yea i was too stupid fell for that '1st customer of the day' crap daaamn. feel rather stupid

Guys i experience the same situation is Peninsula Plaza just last week...

The shop is opposite Cathay Photo... i actually wanted to buy from Cathay Photo but its so crowded and i'm in a rush so i decided to pop in to the shop opposite Cathay Photos, well actually it is located 2 doors down opposite Cathay Photo.

While inside i ask for 2 UV lens and i was expecting a well known brand. Instead i was offer 2 lens... one is a Vitacon and the other i can't even see the brand at all. I was told that they are from US and are as good as the common HOYA. I open it up and inspect... everything looks brand new and ok to me. I was given a discount even though i did not ask for it and was quote a final price of $50. Fine with me i pay up and hoping i did not buy something that are worth even cheaper outside.

Then something happen....

The owner wipe out a box of Wide angle convertor with Close up lens... He told me is very popular and alot of ppl buy from him... I was like really??? i took a look and ask for the price... i was quote SGD$250 i was like 'ARE YOU SERIOUS?' i remember seeing similiar thing in Amazon for much less then USD50!!! i say thanks and paid for my lens and left. I know i was being con but too bad. As he was showing me the convertor my card was already swipe.

I mean that shop look 'ok' to me with lots of stock on shelf i mean how bad can his biz be if he is a con and that is why i went in...

Is my instint right? Those convertor don't even worth SGD$250 rite?
