Whats the difference between these 2 Hoya filters?

I borrowed my friends lens and noticed something different about the filter.

His says UV(0) while mine says UV-Guard. Also noticed a difference in the Hoya logo and his says made in japan and mine just japan.

Im a little puzzled. :dunno:

a quick check on the Hoya website indicates that the name for standard Hoya UV filter is UV(O), and the "HOYA" logo is as the top filter. but there are also the HOYA UV-Guard filters in the market. maybe it's a different version for different markets

The label in the filter rim is similar to your UV-Guard: standard logo and only 'Japan". Seems it's just a different version of the same filter. Wouldn't be the first case, even B+W has 2 different versions: one for China market, one for rest of the world.

The uv guard box is dark blue color. All words no picture.

His UV[0] is also blue with 2 pictures one showing without the uv0 and the other with uv0.

I noticed that too. Confusing haa. Anyway, mine works fine.

They are both real for sure.

UV guard is a lot older. I had one, and it flares and ghost quite a bit.

UV[0] is slightly newer and works ok.

Now even UV[0] is getting replaced with UV[C] and UV[N] I think...

Blue packaging ones are usually one side (older) or both side coated (newer). Green packaging ones are uncoated I think. Can't really remember already..

Oh, for a moment, my friend thought his was fake. Hoya's are already so affordable, doesn't make much sense to fake a low end filter.

Of course printed logo can change. Why not.

If you buy Nike shoes. Some shoes show only the shoosh. Some show the word NIKE. Some come with the shoosh and the word NIKE.

It is all up to the manufacturer.

BTW, Tokina manufactures ALL Hoya filters. There are no other manufacturers.
