F365`s Top Ten Moves Of The Summer...
Posted 01/09/10 09:40

Chili sauce!!

10 - Moussa Dembele - £5million from AZ Alkmaar to Fulham
We're always suspicious when a Premier League club spends £5million on a player we've barely heard of. We're even more suspicious when a Premier League club signs anyone from Holland. Therefore, you can only imagine the soaring levels of 'Hhmmmm...' that swept through F365 Towers when Fulham paid AZ Alkmaar £5million for this Dembele chap, he of a less-than-stellar scoring rate of slightly better than one in five. However, the early signs are good, possessing that sort of gliding speed that troubles defences so much, a delicate touch and a penchant for the perfectly-weighted through ball. He might not be the man to score 20 goals, but if his football so far is anything to go by, £5million might be a snip.

9 - Ramires - £17million from Benfica to Chelsea
The good thing about the Chelsea midfield these days is its versatility. Michael Essien can anchor or attack, Yossi Benayoun can play out wide or in the middle, even Frank Lampard can perform a couple of roles. And now there's Ramires. Known as 'the Kenyan' for his tireless running, the Brazilian midfielder brings the combination of invention and industry that Chelsea demand of their midfielders, and like many of his colleagues, can perform a number of different roles. Especially good considering he was ostensibly purchased to replace the often lethargic-looking Michael Ballack.

8 - Martin Petrov - Free from Manchester City to Bolton
Always a favourite at F365 Towers, Petrov could always have done better in our eyes. Better, even, than Manchester City when he first moved there, but with the millions being splashed on James Milner and David Silva, he didn't stand a chance of staying at Eastlands. Bolton have therefore pulled off one of the finest bits of business of the summer by reportedly beating off (stop it) Everton and a bunch of others for the Bulgarian's squiggle. It's the sort of signing that suggests Owen Coyle's desire to turn Bolton's style around is truly serious.

7 - Paul Scharner - Free from Wigan to West Brom
Just after Roy Hodgson took over at Liverpool, there was persistent talk that he would carry over his Fulham shopping list to Anfield, and bring in Scharner. There was scoffing aplenty, but that's because some people still think Liverpool are title contenders. If Scharner would've represented a half-decent free for Liverpool, he's a more than decent signing for West Brom. Able to play in a number of positions, he adds a little oomph to their midfield, and if nothing else he has experience of surviving in the Premier League by the very skin of his teeth.

6 - Ben Foster - £6million from Manchester United to Birmingham
The satisfaction felt by Birmingham fans last season at the steadiness of their goalkeeper would've been tempered by the knowledge that Joe Hart wasn't theirs for keeps. Like lovers sharing a wonderful but all-too-brief weekend, it would be over too soon. Of course, Ben Foster is not as good as Hart, but at least he is theirs to keep. The speed at which Alex McLeish moved to bring in Foster was impressive, having his signing wrapped up immediately after the end of last season. With years as a first-choice number one stretching ahead of him, England's keeping problems could be a lot less worrying.

5 - William Gallas - Free from Arsenal to Tottenham
What Tottenham needed was a centre-half, preferably experienced, preferably one who's played in the Champions League, preferably one that isn't going to cause a massive stink in the dressing room. Three out of four ain't bad. If Gallas can avoid being a right old sulky git then this might be a belting deal, and one to help Spurs succeed in Europe. However, the old boy does have a history of taking a mallet to the bone china of dressing room harmony. We shall wait and see.

4 - Joe Cole - Free from Chelsea to Liverpool
The most talented player of his generation or an ineffective show-pony? The rebirth of a career heading south, or a drop down from champions to mediocrity? A riskless free transfer, or an awful drain on wages? Cole's move to Liverpool is really one of those that could go either way. The optimists will tell you that he will provide Liverpool with an additional spark, some invention to take the heat of Gerrard and Torres, and that England would've been fine with Cole in the side. The pessimists will say there was a reason he wasn't in Fabio Capello's team in the first place, and only 122 starts in seven seasons at Chelsea tells its own story. If Cole stays fit, and shows his best form, then it will be the deal of the summer. However, that's a big, big 'if'.

3 - Kenwyne Jones - £8million from Sunderland to Stoke
Before the start of the season, your correspondent wrote that, after establishing themselves as a Premier League team, Stoke basically had two choices in the transfer market; they would either change their rather robust style by bringing in players with a little more subtlety and nous, or simply buy more of the same, but better. Their business in the window actually suggests they've done both. Jones falls very much into the latter category - his power and ability to hold up the ball making him a rather classier and more mobile alternative to Mama Sidibe. Of course, his inconsistency is legend, and the reason that Sunderland sold him. However, if Tony Pulis can turn Jones from a 'one game in three' to a 'two games in three' player, then he'll be well worth the £8million.

2 - Eidur Gudjohnsen - undisclosed from Monaco to Stoke
As for the subtlety route, there could hardly be a better realistic option for Stoke than Gudjohnsen. On deadline day it was reported that the veteran forward had signed on loan from Monaco, but as the dust settled it emerged he has actually moved permanently. And on a one-year contract, presumably for a nominal fee, there is little to no risk in bringing a feather-light touch into a team of sledgehammers.

1 - Titus Bramble - £1million from Wigan to Sunderland
At one time a byword for the clanger, the boob, the defensive slapstick that would cause a nation to howl with laughter at Newcastle, Bramble is now an accomplished centre-half. Indeed, Wigan's apparent willingness to let him go with nary a whimper is deeply puzzling. Selling a 28-year-old defender for only £1million when defensive stability is not exactly your forte looks like negligence on Wigan's behalf. Bramble was colossal in Sunderland's recent 1-0 win over Manchester City, keeping firstly Carlos Tevez then Emmanuel Adebayor rather neatly in his back pocket. A bargain.

Petrov moved for free? why didnt we sign him??

i think becos manSipTea do not allow him to move to their direct competitors for 4th placing... :embrass:

felt so happy that some club see us so up! :bsmilie:
