2010.08.31 New Olympus m4/3 Lenses

I would rather they announce primes. These zooms border on sport and wildlife photography, something the m4/3 system isn't quite good for yet.

The 75-300mm certainly seems to be destined for bright light video from a distance. Even if it's the smallest zoom of its kind ever, I can't imagine how well it will be handled on the end of an E-P1 with that tiny grip.

Olympus should have a telephoto macro prime for micro Four-Thirds by now since Panasonic has already addressed the lower end. Of course, Olympus should have that telephoto macro for the Four-Thirds line, also.

Still waiting for the m4/3 equivalent of the 12-60.

I believe there wont be any fast zoom lenses for m4/3. Those who want fast lenses can look for prime lenses (17mm/20mm etc) instead. Look at all those constant f2.8 zoom lenses in the market from other brands. They are all big and heavy. It kind of contradict the initial intention of mirrorless camera.

after some thought, these 2 lenses do make sense in Oly's perspective. still a lot of users dont have a zoom lens yet. so the 40-150mm is a good answer to fill the gap, the 4/3 version + adapter equivalent is still heavier and has noisier AF. if the m4/3 version is on par with the 4/3 in terms of IQ then its quite a good lens then.

as for the 75-300mm, its a specialty lens, maybe not for everyone. but having that light alternative will be appreciated by some and it all depends how good it focuses, i'm more interested in this new High-speed Imager AF (MSC), something to look forward to in future lenses

this is a leak of the new lens roadmap:

8mm fisheye, 12mm wide and 50mm macro coming spring 2011

Actually, I'm quite happy with Olympus decision to come out with these 2 lenses. If you think about it, with these 2 lenses, we will be completely covered from 9mm to 300mm(18-600mm 35mm equiv).

Seems like the new roadmap doesn't have anything new??

I'm not at all impressed with the sample images of the 75-300mm, looks rather soft.

The old 4/3 70-300mm is already very slow at the long end (F5.6), this is even worse at F6.7... :(

And why is Olympus making very similar m4/3 lenses as Panasonic??

The lenses seems to be getting darker and darker.. What happen to f2s?

Bcos they want consumers to buy the Olympus equiv instead?

How can they expect us to buy the Olympus equiv when they are making the inferior version of the lens if ignoring the differences in size...

For example:

1) mZD 9-18mm vs Lumix 7-14mm
- The lumix is significantly wider (7mm) for a UWA and has constant F4, Oly only goes to 9mm

2) mZD 40-150mm vs Lumix 45-200mm
- The lumix has longer reach and should have a larger aperture at 150mm

3) mZD 75-300mm vs Lumix 100-300mm
- At 300mm, the lumix is faster at F5.6 vs F6.7 and has OIS.

4) mZD 17mm vs Lumix 20mm
- The lumix is more than 1 stop faster at F1.7 vs F2.8

5) mZD 14-42mm vs Lumix 14-45mm
- The 14-45mm focuses faster and is quieter

you forgot to consider the price. maybe oly's strategy now is making more affordable and lighter lenses than competing with quality. i know its a bit crazy but we cant do anything about it hehehe

but even with 4/3 lenses, the Pany were very good even beating the Zuikos especially the Leica ones

I agree, have to look at who the PENs are aiming at, they're aimed mainly at consumers rather than professionals who know nothing or little about aperture etc, they're more concern with better image quality and getting that picture,so while the lenses are slow and similar to Panasonic, we cannot do anything about except wait

They have to compete with Panasonic to survive, just because Panasonic makes 14-140,I have to make 70-300, then if no one buys or very few buys my 70-300,isn't my company done for?

Until a pro PEN comes,I highly doubt that we'll see any f2 lenses anytime soon

I agree the images look soft,but not a bit,but quite a lot

According to Dpreview, the 75-300 lens cost 899 Euro. That's expensive!

Unless Oly is giving up 4/3 entirely like Panny. They will not come out something for m4/3 that can replace their 4/3 product line. The reality of marketing.:)
