Hi,

I have a K7 that comes with two lens kit (18-55mm and 50-200mm).
In the market there is a 18-250mm lens for K7.
Curious to find out which is a better choice....

1) to have a 18-55mm and a 50-200mm or
2) to have a 18-250mm lens only (which actually cover what my 2 lenses can do and more)

Thank you.

my vote is for option 1.

if u travel alot,
if u change lens alot,
and u hate changing lens,

then 18-250 suits u more..

note that ur twin lens should be WR and the 18-250 isnt..

Serious photographer with big bag : Option 1
Traveller photographer with little space : Option 2

Hi, i personally prefer option 1 as the 18-55 and 50-200(zoom lens) is on different usage. It can assist us better in knowing our favourite focal length - just my 2 cents :)

the 18-55 and 50-200 are neither very big, nor very heavy.

assuming that we are talking abt the WR version, the 2 of them will have a combined weight of only abt 460 grams.

the 18-250 is neither very small, nor very light. by itself, it is already 455 grams

he means space... space...

Thank you guys for the feedback and info.

From what I have gathered, it is about space....

I have this thought of getting the 18-250mm and sell off the 18-55mm and 50-200mm.
Is this a good move to do that? I am more on taking scenary....

imo, i would prefer to keep the kit lenses.

my reasons:
- the WR kit lenses are weather sealed; a perfect match for your K7.
- for scenery, the 18-55 is very versatile for landscape.
- the kit lens image quality is actually very good.

scenery doesnt really need the longer end right?

like i said, if u need to change lens alot, and changing lens made u lose a lot of shots, then u should get the 18-250
if not, just stick to wat u have

Actually nobody can give you a perfect answer. It has be based on personal preference.

If you dislike changing lenses, then you should take 18-250.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

keep yr kit lenses , save money .

The IQ for kit lenses is even better then superzoom ...

Thanks bro evolutioner and detritus for the advices.....I will keep and use them....:):):)

glad to know ur decision..

i think that u'll be pissed with the distortion at wide end if u're using 18-250 especially when u're shooting scenery

if you want to isolate certain details, or compress the depth of the landscape then you need to use a telephoto lens. for example:

90mm

200mm

i had to switch out from the 12-24 to the 70-200 which was a beast of a lens to have on a holiday, so i can definitely see the merits of a 18-250 lens for travel.. ;p

this i agree..
a recent trip made me realise the versatility of having a mega zoom lens instead of having to swap lenses at impossible times

Previously I tried bringing the Pentax 18-250 and 1 prime along for my holidays. I ended up using only the 18-250 because it was a hassle to change lenses especially when taking pictures of kids who will not sit still. The 18-250 does not yield really great shots but is flexible enough to meet most of your zooming needs. If you had to bring one along, this would be it.
Recently I am also not adverse to bringing the Pentax 17-70 mm along instead as the zoom is still sufficient for most situations. :)

I would say using an 18-250 is a completely different ball game and the convenience it offers is unparalled.

if you find yourself constantly accessing focal lengths inside of those two ranges in short amounts of times, the 18-250 will be extremely helpful.

as much as IQ is what you want, there will definitely be a period when enjoying your event is more important than sheer IQ and having to change lenses back and forth repeatedly while not being impossible will make you miss out on many photos you would really want to take.

plus, the IQ of the Pentax 18-250(or the tamron brother) is really good. Labeled the "King of Superzooms", while it is a fact that it is inferior to that of the dedicated zooms, it is still very good. the dedicated zooms are just slightly better.

for me, while the 18-250 is not the lens that spends the most time on my camera, it is one that i cannot do without, in travels especially :D

Well said. You can also consider the various situation you are in when overseas.

I once was trekking a mountain and I had my megazoom with me. I can't imagine if I have to alternate between the different lens and also given the no of stuff i already have to carry, you will thank God for as little additional stuff as possible.

IMHO, get the megazoom (sell off your kit lens) and as you play around with it, you can decide if you need to upgrade to higher IQ delicated lens.
