Hi All,
Need some advice in tripod. I am looking for a tripod that has geared center column. For the budget, well I want to know any recommendations that you have. Definitely at the end of the day budget is one of the factor before buying. However I believe that knowing all the options will be better in order to make any decisions (including 'budget decision')

My gear is not heavy. the heaviest I have is D90 with 80-200.

ps: Interestingly, I tried to search and google it, most of the tripod discussion is on budget travel tripod, very seldom I see people discuss about other type of tripod (including this geared center collumn tripod)

Thank you,
Cheers

Why WOULD you need that??

In the first place, that should be the last consideration as you shouldn't lift up the centre column whenever possible, use the legs first. :)

out of all the many tripods i have seen before, the geared centre column tripod that i know of is either the one that was given free when i purchase my camera or lower end ones .. :bsmilie:

maybe i haven seen enough.. :dunno:

Slik's professional series (carried by Cathay Photo) has got geared center column.

Go pay them a visit, and check out the range of Slik tripods there.

Also, walk around on 2nd Level of Peninsula Plaza to K-13, and then TK Photo at Funan IT Mall.

Cheers!

Well sometimes I need to adjust it just a little bit, without changing other axis. So thinking it would be great, especially since I do some product shoots and interior shoots. :)

I know one from manfrotto, Gitzo, and Silk... hope to get recommendation from other CS member

Noted, will check them later. Any review about them?

i have not owned a geared column tripod before. used a few before though. it makes more sense to use one if you are using a heavy setup because it makes it easier to adjust the minute height difference.

paired with a 3 way head, i think it will be good for what u like to shoot. btw i have only used manfrotto ones before. the big ass ones.

Correct... I saw one, manfrotto brand. I know one of pro using gitzo one. Out of my budget, so thinking to find other brand

In my opinion, Gear Tripod should paired with Gear head... That will make it a gear combination.

BTW Gear tripod + Gear Head movement is much slower then Ball or 3 way head and it generally heavier but the precision is much better... Therefore I think this tripod is best for Studio or product shoot...

TS, R u going to use for studio or product shoot?

Yes, I am using them for some interior shoot and product shoot. I am considering to buy gear head, however I have a normal 3-way head, so my next option is to buy geared collumn tripod first before gear head.

I feel that It is easier to control camera using normal 3-way head than control height using normal tripod. One time, I have a composition almost right then need to have a slightly higher angle. I push-up the center collumn, and accidentally I lift the whole tripod. For the head, as long as I move only one axis, another axis will not change. For center collumn, it is possible that it will move tripod's position.
