Hi

I own a canon 40D for nearly 1.5 yrs.. with 10,000 shutters on it...

today i left the house with a full charge and the battery indicator display half after snapping for 15-20 mins.. it is usually not the case for the indicator to drop so fast.. ive only taken approximately 10-15 30sec shutter shots..

- is my battery dead?
- is it normal? because the usage of my camera isn't that high (hence battery charges arent that frequent)
- i was told it could be a camera problem too, how do I troubleshoot?
- last but not least, anybody can recommend a good 3rd party battery? i was thinking of trying photix..

thanks!!!

Battery starts to deteriorate after frequent charges or non-frequent usage. Some can last much longer than the others. I would suggest you try to recharge the battery again and see if the same happen again. If so, it might be time for you to consider replacing the battery. Phottix is a good 3rd party battery to consider.

Think it is pretty normal that battery cannot hold it charge after prolong usage...The user manual should state this...

If you want to test if the issue lies with your cam or batt, you can try borrow a batt from a friend who use the same batt for his camera? Or you can try go down to the Canon Showroom or service center to borrow their batt? Think should be ok as they are usually quite helpful...

But another possible cause could be the batt charger as well...

When shooting I always carry one extra battery just in case. One battery should give you 300 to 1,000 shots base on my experience. If the lens with IS it dry up battery faster. :)

.

are u using a grip? 40D grip have problem detecting accurate battery life... sometime when it's full, the indicator will drop to near empty after 10mins of usage... taking the battery in and out would solve this issue (interim solution)...

but after nearly 2 yrs of usage, the charges hold would probably deteriorate by abt 50%... battery should be store at an optimum charge of 40-60% to ensure pro-long usage :)

It's probably the battery, although there could be other factors involved. Our current technology just isn't good enough yet. Batteries tend to deteriorate over time.

phottix is good third party batt. Try them - cheap anyway.

yeah, ive tried recharging the battery and took some shots.. after 20-30min the battery indicator drops..

yeah.. i know.. usually it allows me 500+ shots.. but last night was my first time experiencing such a fast battery indicator drop.. but i have not tried to shoot until the battery is drained though...

nope, im not using any battery grip... im intending to get a package though..

btw, are we allowed to chose the battery source?

example:

1. shoot till the battery grip batteries are dead den use the camera's battery?
2. vice versa of #1?
3. so, charging the batteries must charge 3 of them individually? or we can just plug in an adaptor to charge the battery grip directly?

I guess you most probably have misconception about battery grip.

There are 2 types of grip which 40D can use.

1 which is BG-E2/BG-E2N which holds 2 batteries and there's a portion of the grip which slides directly into the battery compartment of the DSLR. This will hold maximum 2 batteries only.

Another is WFT-E3 which holds 1 battery but typically used for the wireless transmission purposes only. It doesn't supply any power to the DSLR.

There are also 3rd party grip which comes with built-in/integrated battery.

my original batt died after 9 mths. Similar problem to yours except it died after 20 shots. Now I just buy 3rd party batt x 6 and going to get a grip. ebay sells some of the batt quite cheap. I use Travor + Phottix.

From my understanding, battery and body don't really link IF the battery deteriorate.

To add on a point rgd 3rd party batt... Get the camera device brand one... It has a better performance than de phottix one... Though it is slightly ex

my friend had the same problem... it wasnt his battery's fault.. he went to the svc center and told it was the body's problem..
