Putting grease on lens mount

I noticed a CS'r had put grease on his lens mount when I accidentally took his lens, thinking it was a demo set. That was during an equipment molestation session some time back.

Mechanically speaking, spreading a thin layer of grease will reduce friction when mounting/dismounting the lens, but does it actually helps?

Yes, it helps to collect dust, dirt and even sand. It will happily stick to the grease, ready to migrate further into the mirror chamber and settle at positions we can only get nightmares about...

Thats the manual way of weather sealing your lens. haaaa

Well, of course it helps

Helps spread grease to shirt sleeves, bag interiors, etc. But the biggest help will be come resale time, you can say no scratches on optics or mount.

Scratches on the mount are a big no no, even worse than scratches on the glass, really. Light hitting scratches on the mount till intensify due to the unique circular nature of the scratches, speeding up and around faster and faster in a coiling motion until it reaches warp speed.

I don't think it's a good idea too, so thought of seeking opinions.

I always clean the lens mount (the round perimeter) of used lenses when I got them, and noticed that sometimes the cloth does get dirty, with a little smudge that looked like grease. Good thing I always keep them grease-free before using. :sweat:

reduce friction? :think: my lenses mount n dismount perfectly smoothly the way it is right now, dry n clean n no grease...

maybe the grease might help in sealing, but only if use silicon grease i guess, like for uw casing, but then only very very thin layer

do not risk fouling up the electronic contact points between lens and body.... your own risk

Even tho' the contact portion is not exactly next to the electric contacts, it's not worth the risk. :sweat:

I wasn't sure what kind of grease was used, can't tell by observation. But our lenses/bodies should survive a lifetime without any grease on the mount!

Proof me wrong .. but I suspect they all have the same attractive forces to dust, dirt etc .. So grease is the last thing I want to see at my lens mounts.

It's a taboo thing to do how on earth this came about even droplets of water on
my camera wll make me panicky let alone greasing it....geezus !

grease? sounds like it might even reach the rear element...is the mount really so dry/rough to take such a step?;p

do you know even WHAT WEIGHT TYPE of oil/grease and in what quantity to apply not even talking about the delivery medium involved (cotton bud/wool/cloth?) ?
