Ok guys,

to stir up more on the topic on "is it hard to earn a living with photography",
it is very interesting to hear argument on all sides.

The next question is...
Is it possible to derive a six figure income (nett) in your first Or second year? Of course from photography?

Six figure could be as low as 100k to as high as 999k.

Any thought?

Regards,

Hart

i don't see why not. If you can do 52 weddings at 4K each..minus expenses. Im talking about the low end here..

I agree about it being possible. But you are being extremely unrealistic to think that anyone is going to be able to book 52 weddings a year for $4k each with only a year of reputation behind them.

52 weddings at maybe $400 each, sure.

Without a huge client base and referrals from that way, which you won't have as a starter, you're going to also have to plough an insane amount of money into advertising to get work, especially if you want 52 weddings in a year.

I do agree it's entirely possible, however.

So Jed, care to share how u think it's possible then? let's hear your alternative plan

For the lucky 1% who have the social network to be hired at high rates... why not?

wow 52 different couples choosing 52 seperate dates in a year without clashing ......... there has to be some great friendships and compromises for this to happen

52 weddings is possible no doubt...however i wish to clarify is it because of the local economy, the spending power of Singaporean, a 4k price tag for wedding day photography considered low end?

:D Ed....it does happen...coz of Sat and Sun...and if certain hotels are booked, people are willing to go for alt dates, there is also a handful in a year that do weekday weddings

6 fig salary is the parkball figure? Working for 10+ yrs.. with Degree.. still only touch half.. sad..

i'm pretty sure more and more new comers will be rushing in to join the wedding industry after reading this thread.

possible, yes............. anything is possible.

probable, i sure hope not, i should have done photography if it was highly probable for this to be true. :bsmilie:

that is why many wants to be own boss...
cos only being a boss can one have the chance to earn much much more than a worker...
i suppose...

Wow, didn't know that a day's wedding shoot is now $4K to be considered low end. Mine was abt $1K back then.

Must tell my kids to be photographer, don't need to pay so much tax somemore :D

i wonder any one hit $4000 wedding x 52 in singapore.........

I read somewhere that Singapore median salary is abt 52K. I think it is more realistic to aim at 50k annual pay then 100k.

haha. is my mom wanted a photographer. i didn't. :sweatsm:

Oh no, hope my kid won't tell me that (if he becomes a photographer) :p

Oh my, that's pretty sizeable. Hope u meant Pro photographers otherwise I don't see general Singgies getting 50grand a year. On another note, one of my friend is doing pretty fine in NY doing fashion but that's probably one in a thousand as network, attitude & luck are the keys. Most of them struggle a bit.

My guess is, after 3-5yrs of proper commercial work, it could be possible to have regular 6 figures.

If you really meant "median" as in everybody, and not just photographers... :bheart:
