Hey guys!

Just bought a sony prime lens yesterday. Discovered a small "dirt" IN the lens the next day. At first it look like a dirt, tried blowing using a blower but no effect. Tried wiping it with cloth, no effect, as it does not even touch the dirt (its in the lens).

I assumed it was reflection of the light in the room, but went outdoor and it is at the same position. Assumed it was light reflection as the "dirt" is very black.

Went back to the shop and was told to send to sony for repair. Salesman told me its a "bubble" that enable the mechanism to expand and contract. But, hours after buying already sent for repair? Isn't that patethic?

I don't know whose to blame, sony or the shop. But is it normal as the salesman said?

You should be able to do a 1-for-1 exchange at the shop. It's definitely not normal, though a picture of the "bubble" would help us identify it.

Sony service is pretty fast anyway.

the shop shouldve done a 1-1 exchange for u. Maybe next time u should blacklist the shop in such cases...

Im guessing the bubble could be water vapour caused by condensation (by bringing it in and out from very cold to very warm places), so if i were to blame, i'll blame the shop since its storage issue.

Well the next best thing is to send it to Sony for cleaning, since its free anyway.

I bought at a shop in ang mo kio. Went there hoping for a 1-for-1 exchange, but they told me to get it repaired. that's the pathetic part.

I don't have a photo though, since it's very small. Just imagine normal "dot" dust, just that this is BRIGHT, REFLECTIVE and inside the lens. Brightness like a tinted window, when part of the tint film is scraped off, and sunlight passing thru.

So should i send it to sony? I don't think this is what should happen if I purchase it just a day ago and a problem crop up. Should I send to sony or request for an exchange?

I'm concerned that cleaning by sony will make the lens less "effective" as its a precision stuff.

If it doesn't show up in pics, you could ignore it. there should be no impact on cleaning by sony as it's their lens and they know what they're doing. Chances are, they may just use a blower to blow away the dust.

Here are 2 photos i just took.

As you guys can see, most probably it's not a dust, as its SHINING very bright, hard to miss. I know it might not affect a photo in a huge way, but still, I buy it with my money, so I expect to get a flawless product, and good service. Another concern is when I might want to sell it, the buyer might not be convince if I tell him that "dust" is no big deal.

You do realize that dust in a lens is normal, and as you continue using the lens, more dust will appear, right? As for that speck, honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. If you bring it for cleaning, you'll get good service and they'll clean it. But if you bring it back for every dust particle, you will never be shooting.

that looks like dust to me...

it appears shiny cos it reflects the light.

If u r really worried, u can send it for cleaning.

But i wouldnt waste my time if its me, dust is normal and it will come back within a few days.

BTW u r wrong to say it doesnt affect photos in a huge way.

The fact is, that spec of dust is not gonna affect ur photos at all....

Could be a flaw in the lens coating? Does it look red / green in color at certain angles? I have something similiar (thought mine seem smaller and less obvious) in a Nikon zoom lens which NSC told me is NORMAL. They told me this is a lens coating flaw but is NORMAL. However they still allow me to do a 1-to-1 exchange even though it is NORMAL. :dunno:

Since the shop do not want to do a 1-to-1 exchange for you, you could go back to Sony and ask them to do a 1-to-1 exchange instead. And if Sony ask you to go back to the shop, you can ask Sony to arrange with the shop first before you proceed down.

Is the shop a Sony authorised dealer?

Ok will try sending it to sony to see if they can do an exchange. Not sure if the shop is dealer for sony but its a HIGHLY reputable shop.

Gd lucks to you~!...but if it is just dust then I guess just leave it, unless it is affecting your pic....dust is really part and parcel of lens so just need to learn to let go.... :)
