I would be in London for work. Are there any clubsnapper stationed there?

What are the safety concerns? I will be there soon as well, thinking to just walk along the River Thames and access the attractions along the river and also those nearby.

there are some areas that are more dodgey than others.

e.g. clapham area, brixton area, hackney area. the violent crime rate will be higher.

example:

that said, most of central london which tourists will go to is safe. the most dangerous thing that might happen is that you might get your wallet stolen.

Hmm... indeed cause for concern. I'm staying at Mile End for a night. Heard that place is pretty quiet as well. Thanks for the info night86mare.

If you're staying at Mile End, take the Central Line (Eastbound) towards Wanstead. Get out of the Station, there is a building called THE GEORGE. In this photo http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/91142, The George is the building with the green roofs, and on the right you can see the Wanstead Underground. The large open field is called The Green, and is quite lovely in summer.

Wanstead itself is a lovely little sleepy town http://www.visitlondon.com/areas/villages/wanstead-village

i have only perused online shops.

physical shops wise, jessops is ok, but price is not good at all, unless there is offer.

better to molest the gear at jessops, and then order online at:

1) morrisphoto
2) warehouse express
3) amazon

combination of these three will give you relatively competitive prices for sure, maybe not the cheapest, but these 3 are very reliable.

there are also other online shops, but i haven't ordered from them before, so i cannot say for sure.

that said, you will not find many steals in london, uk pricing for camera gear is significantly higher, so i suggest you hold back and buy in singapore. 80% of the time it will be cheaper.

if you want to find good steals, you can try ebay uk. old lenses, old film cameras can go for really much cheaper than what you find in sg. expired film too!

Would it be safe if I carry a bag full of equipment?

I need thinking of getting some filter for landscaping. So I should get these in Singapore?

i usually do..

have not encountered any trouble, just a few chatty bypassers who want to talk about gear.. :)

only once, when i was at a relatively quiet corner with not many people around, i encountered someone whose first question was "hey buddy, how much does that equipment cost?" and he continued walking towards me.

i do think that i was overreacting, but i was new then, and that place was really quiet, so i ran. :)

what brand?

GND filters in london, think you can only get cokin, they will be priced higher there.

next level is LEE, i don't know the pricing for that, you have to do the homework yourself.

other filters, B+W ND110, used to be cheaper in london, now it is more expensive even with the more competitive pound, if you look in the right places in SG, of course.

Studying in London till June 2011 (back in SG for summer holiday at the moment) and I've walked London by day and night with my buddy and didn't encounter any problems. That said we avoid the dodgy places as mentioned above, and stick together. Also we tend to use very modest equipment which doesn't draw any more attention than the throngs of tourists :)

If you're still in London when I go back (Sept 2010) drop me a PM.

I will be starting my first year in west london this september. Really wanna snap some great photos of the architecture there and of course europe as well.

BUT! I'm no photographer, don't own a camera and know nuts about the sport. I'm still wondering whether to get a camera here or there? or 2nd hand? with considerations over warranty issues. Anyone keen to help me out? Thanks!
