Hi guys,

I was wondering do you see distortion on the following image?
The denim is supposed to appear smooth and naturally colored. On my iMac and Macbook it looks correct but one my Windows PC has it look weird

Pic 1 is image in .jpeg
On correct displays it should show smooth texture and look like denim, ignore the actual tones

Pic 2 is a photograph of my monitor indicating the distortion.

Pic 3 is a photograph of my other monitor with no distortion.

If you are having the same problem as me, all 3 will look about the same in terms of distortion, lots of noise. If not only Pic 2 will seem really off.

only 2 is off then. is it only this pic or all the pics? what are u using to display the pic?

I'm using

Windows 7 Ultimate
Dell 2209WA
ATI 5850 in case it mattered

Viewed using windows picture viewer, photoshop, camera raw(of the original raw), everything. They all have the distortion.

Even on Windows XP of the same computer.

I've not noticed other problems so far only this particular pair of denim jeans has this problem.

very interesting. is it possible for u to upload the raw so i can see how it display on my monitor?

On my monitor it looks like #1, no distortions or colour effects as on #2 or #3.
Checked with Fast Picture Viewer and Lightroom (2.7)
Comparing your #1 here and my LR display at 100% it seems as if your #1 is somewhat blurred.

Wow yea that's good (i'm viewing on the good monitor now)

But actually i was not trying to improve the picture, i was trying to figure out what was causing the distortion on one computer's display...

I tried taking some photos apparently this problem shows up really obvious when you have a blend of colours that are nearly similar, such as the denim you get specks and shades of similar colours. Fur is also another type of texture that causes this distortion to show up

I hope you can see the distortion as in Pic 2

i am hazarding a guess that it could be your software that is having problems processing the files.

It looks like the evil witch - Moire.

Was your system hardware calibrated ? Your jpg version has some blue casting which could have made the moire effect more noticeable.

Yea it does look like an interference pattern.
But how come it only shows up on this computer's display? Actually I tried viewing it again in Windows XP and it does not have this problem, however Firefox in Windows XP shows the effect again.

So on the problematic computer:

Windows 7
Picture viewer - Distorted
Photoshop - Distorted
Firefox - Distorted

Windows XP
Picture viewer - Not distorted
Photoshop - Not installed
Firefox - Distorted

My system not calibrated

i believe nothing to do with calibration. Although i must say the 3 colors are somewhat different. But more importantly seems like noise cleanup engine applied was too strong. either that or the color profiles got messed up during output to jpeg.

Sorry but again I need to point out that my problem was not about the image or color problem. My problem is out of all the computers I have one of them is displaying that image (Pic 1) with a lot of distortion (Pic 2). Pic 3 illustrates one computer displaying it correctly. I am not really concern if any of them is off-colour just the major distortion on the display.

Figured out the problem.
Bad ICC profile for the monitor, and I used the one supplied by the Dell driver!

Used without a profile and with someone else's profile, no distortion but then colour is questionable

Calibrate your screen, period. No point editing any picture if you can't be sure that what you see is close to that what is digitally described in the image. For budget: You can borrow from a friend, install and calibrate, then return the device. Recalibration after 2..3 months is enough.

Yea man I know what you mean, been deliberating for months!
Nobody i know has a meter, guess I'll have to be that friend

its not that expensive. but doing it correctly will be more painful. i just changed to a new graphics card and monitor and it is screwing up my cheapo calibrator. so i just adjusted the rgb, brightness and contrast myself. i can't adjust the gamma but i think its not too far off. i matched it to my prints made.
