Will be in the vicinity of Dusseldorf for about 3 weeks in Sept, for work-training.
Now trying to search for places of interest for photography in the evenings and weekends.
If anyone has any information on this area, or any websites to recommend, would appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.
thanks!

Why not google it? Wiki? A lot of information available...

I did read through the wikipedia entry about the Ruhr region, but then I have no idea where everything is in relation to each other, despite opening Google maps in one window and the wikipedia in the other, and switching back and forth between them.
Found some Germany tourism website, but I don't have an understanding of how they classify each region within the country.
Still doing my research. Just trying my luck here in case someone has been to that area before and can point me in the right direction.

Well, I have been to Cologne last year for 2 mths. Dusseldorf is not too far away. I would recommend if you have time during weekends, do take a RE(regional express) train down to Cologne. Visit the famous Dom, which is just right in front of the train station :)

ok... adding that to my list... thanks!

actually there are many places are within reach from Dusseldorf. as mentioned, u can take the RE to those big/medium/small town, but make sure you skip the S-Bahn (unless u have lots of time) because it will stop at all the village/town.
1. dusseldorf - you can walk along the ruhr river. there are some interesting buildings at one side (i forgot left or right side) of the river designed by renown architect (sorry i forgot many places it was roughly 3yrs since i last stayed there)
2. koln - but it's not under NRW region anymore so the ticket might be slight expensive compared to NRW (north-rhein westphalia) region. there are lots of english speaking people in koln. things there are also more expensive. :D
3. ratingen - espirit factory outlet! super cheap
4. oberhausen - zoo. maybe u can meet paul the octopus too :D
5. wuppertal - zoo.
6. essen & duisburg (nice old town), bochum (with underground mining museum), gelsenkirchen (a lot of turkish community here)
(i stayed in essen previously. if take RE to dusseldorf, roughly 30mins. if take s-bahn, roughly 1+hrs).

but basically, there are many old churches around. too bad i dont have dlsr when i studied there.

thanks for the comprehensive list of tips!
Haha I think you're the "expert" that I'm looking for.
Hmmm, my research list is looking plump now.

Intending to capture both the landscape and the old architecture of Germany.

Not sure if kokfann is referring to this building here :

This building is designed by a famous architect.
You can find it along the Rhine river near the TV Media Tower... if you are looking for it :)

Germany is a country with very long history and plenty of historical buildings, churches, castles ..etc. I am sure you will be able to find lots of photography opportunities there

Cheers

yeah..that's the one..lol..thanks Willz!

thanks very much to the both of you! :D

I feel less 'blur' now. haha.

I hope my memory didn't fail me... many years back when we went backpacking in Europe, we went for River Rhine cruise around Dusseldorf. We can hop on and off the ferry along the river, and there are nice castles along the river, one of them was called Lorelei I remembered. Try to check if they still have that, prob can take you one whole day on weekend.

lol..if u are gonna travel by ferry, i think should be slower than the s-bahn :D

Lorelei? I don't think that's near Dusseldorf.. I know I hit around that area, after having lunch at Rüdesheim, before turning back to get back to Hochheim (this was a long lunch trip courtesy of my german colleague) and it will take a long while to get there from Dusseldorf.

And it's not a castle... it's some rocks which a legend says was named of a Rhine maiden of that name killed herself there over some unfaithful lover and return as a siren, and sometimes heard singing on a rock. and the music was so hypnotic that it lure navigators to their doom... Not sure how true that is...

Lorelei (found in Google Maps) looks quite far from Dusseldorf. From the sample pics it doesn't look that nice :)
I'm slowly compiling my list and searching for these places you suggested over the net.

Thanks so much everyone!

if u are going to koln by train, you will pass by Lorelei too. there are many small castles/forts on those rocky hill nearby Lorelei. the towns are at the foot of the hill along the river. it is quite a sight to see.

lorelei looks like it's thrice as far from dusseldorf as Koln... I'm thinking that I found the wrong lorelei...
is it the one at the town of St. Goarshausen?

oops...sorry for the error. my mind is starting to fail on me. :p
actually i was at ramstein (the UN airbase) previously, then took RE back to Koln and changed to another RE to Essen.
ZerocoolAstra, u are right...that Lorelei is located south of Koln (by quite some distance)

i got mixed up with the journey i took from dusseldorf to frankfurt..paiseh....sorry ya..
the more i tried to recalled, more headache it gives me... :(

Oops, my mistake... yes, Lorelei are some rocks... mixed up with the castles.
But I did hear the narration on the ferry, perhaps we were then already quite far from Dusseldorf.
Apologies if it caused some confusion...

it's ok... :)
at the moment still info-gathering stage, so it's no biggie. Thanks for your help! much appreciated.
