any recommended tripod

Hi all, I dunno this thread have been asked before or not?
Actually I have 2 question want to ask
1.Is the price will diff much if I buy in SG with I buy in HK (will go there this fridy)
2.Any recommended tripod currently my body 5D MII with 24-70 attached, so should able to support this weight

Because I don't know where to start the search. maybe you guys can recommend what brand and model that I'll try to googling it

1. Price differences depends on the brands or the specific items you are looking to buy. Some are cheaper in HK, some are more expensive in HK, and some are about the same.

2. There are many choices in tipods, heads. You need to factor in your weight tolerance, your required level of stability, your budget and your preferences in operational height, folded height, lock levels vs twist locks, pan head vs ball head, friction knobs, which quick release system, and other features.

Very hard to give you specific recommendations. I would suggest you go down to a store like TK photo, CP or OP, to get a feel of the tripods available out there. If you are on a tighter budget, I recommend you start looking at benro, sirui, manfrotto, Giottos and Velbon. If you like the best, and have an open budget, get Gitzo and match it with a Markins, Kangrinpoche or more expensive ball head.

I am using:

Manfrotto 190XProB tripod (S$195.00) and the 488RC2 head (S$165.00).

A good entry level set and good enough to support my 5DM2 + 70/200 f2.8L IS M2.

Price difference? Lenses are slightly cheaper in HK (check out Wing Shing, Man Shing in Mongkok). My rule of thumb is if it's not >15% cheaper, then don't worth the hassle getting anything overseas. In case something's wrong, it's easier to go back to local shops for exchange. Unless if you are buying a 10K lens, then 10% is $1000 which is of course worth getting overseas.

I would refrain from 'jumping to conclusions' and making such a specific recommendation. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a tripod. There is no clear-cut winner, if not all the other tripod manufacturers might as well close shop :bsmilie:

Best to inform him of the kinds of choices available, then let him decide.

If he buys your recommended set-up and not happy, then how? You going to compensate him?

there are plenty of brands out thr so ultimately it really depends on ur budget
if ur budget permits of course a carbon fibre tripod will be the best choice since it is much lighter and strong too
like what daredevil123 said, if ur budget permits go for a carbon fibre gitzo, which is the best you can get and you can forget about getting another tripod for god knows how long (maybe forever)...or else check out benro
tripod is seriously like a one-off thing so buy a really good one at the start and you need not waste money and time looking for another one in the future =)

If you have time, go down to Peninsula Shopping Centre (the one with the hotel), and upon entering the mall's main entrance, turn right, 3 or 4 shops away, you can check out tripods there. Don't commit yourself to buying, just browse what is available.

If you remember dleugene (Eugene) from last Saturday's outing, his tripod was a carbon fiber. Because of your stature, remember to find one that is tall enough so that you have to keep bending down and slouch too much when wanted to look through the viewfinder.

Maybe as you attend more outings, especially those shooting landscapes/macros, you'll be able to see what other tripods other members are using, and you can determine if it suits your budget/functional use.

riding on this thread, may I know which shop in Singapore have the largest selection of tripods?

I would like to get one for travel use, probably folded length: 30-35cm and max height >1.2m(around there) so that i can fit it in my daypack when I travel around. Great if anybody could recommend me any tripod that suits that dimension, i can close 1 eye on the build quality and sturdiness cos i am using it for my compact camera, lx3 haha. My budget is prob 100+, not into those gitzo, manfrotto range!

maybe you can try going to funan challenger or else try some of the usual reputable shops and tell them what you want....I hoenstly have not much idea where to get such tripods but I'm sure some shop will have such them hope this helps

Like i say during the outing
1) Get a tripod with as least section as possible
2) Always look at the thinnest section, it must be sturdy enough.
3) Weight limit must be 2x of your heaviest setup (Dingaroo)
4) maximum height(not including the centre mass height) of the tripod + tripod head are perferred to be between eye level and the chest.
5) Overall weight will depend on how much you can carry.
6) Where are you going to use the tripod. (Local/Travel).
7) Is it stable when you take a portrait shoot.

In short, it must be sturdy and stable. And it must give you the confident that it will perform the way you want it to be.

I think it is better for you to check out Benro(Ben Photo), Sirui(TK). They may have tripod + head within your budget.:devil:

Folded length 30-35cm you gotta increase your budget lah.Even some CF tripods are not as compact.

Yea, I understand my budget is quite bullshit for the tripod requirement I am asking. haha but the sunpak one would be decent enough for my use which is priced at 60USD so I was thinking if there are anymore of the same league ones. Anyway, i will go down to those mentioned shops to take a look. thanks!

thx dingarro, actually I also saw his(dleugene) tripod, that one is a nice tripod hehe dunno how much it cost. currently I only have one tripod that I got it free from PC Show last year, i think the brand is digi** something. yesterday when I try it to put my camera it was shaking a lot, that's why I'm planning to buy a new one.
hopefully will get it before Zerocoolastra outing next Wednesday.
