Food Shots

1. in what area is critique to be sought?
composition and is it nice for a food shot
2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
to learn more about this area of photography
3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
taken indoors with window light
4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
as an amateur, it looks good to me. But it will be great if people (who have more experience) would share their comments and constructive suggestions on the matter

Honestly, I'd prefers Allen's nonya kuey ( though mistaken for something that could be eaten...0 my ) to this.

I think because the food has lost its texture. Try a smaller aperture (to increase dof) and underexpose by 2/3 stop or so generally and increase the saturation slightly so that the yellow colour and texture comes out in the second shot.

2nd look, this is taken of the food containing in the styrofoam package.

Somewhere in this forum, there is a post on food photography by a pro-photog. Pls do a read up.

I think because the food has lost its texture. Try a smaller aperture (to increase dof) and underexpose by 2/3 stop or so generally and increase the saturation slightly so that the yellow colour and texture comes out in the second shot.

As mentioned, colours are really important for food shots. Also, do notice the green cast on the white container

well. its much better to not spam a full write up sometimes. quite exhausting. hence usually we dun all spam long critiques.

ur food is ok bah. mine was a wet piece of plastic o.o dunno why cabby finds it tasty.

ur roasted pork. problem with ur selection of food is that they tend to be only a few colors. hard to make them look interesting. first one has the glint of oil, which shld make it look nice. yet the lack of veggies makes it look too oily and hence not so yummy looking.

ur using quite a large aperture i would say?for me i might had used a tele photo for this image to get a blurred background, but rice and meat still well in focus.

as for ur popiah one, somehow color is towards yellow orange. even the green looks yellowish haha. perhaps u wanna shift it so that green looks like green, yellow looks like yellow. some of the details of the tao gay (bean sprout) seems washed out:think:

my advice on food will be to have a variety of colours, so that it looks interesting. watch out for color casts too

If you want somethingserious, here goes...

Food photography, a subject... which includes a whole lots of recipes and menus plus commercially available food products and some personal innovation dishes.

What are the most important element in food photography, besides the food will be...styling and lighting.

Unfortunately, it is sad to say both are lacking in this post.

Proper styling is a form of respect to the product or the one who prepare it.
It is also a kind of presentation, similar to flower arrangement.
Those who had the experience of the Japanese way of flower arrangemnt and or the art of brewing tea will fully understand what I am trying to say.

To comment this as an actual food product photos rather than a casual snap shot, I would say it barely touches the surface of food photography.

And one question to ask...

how come this TS is allowed to post two pictures and the other TS who post two pictures at the bottle tree thread received a warning from the Moderator ?

The reason why this thread was posted in the Critique Corner was to gather CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. And by definition it means: "Constructive criticism is criticism that has a goal of improving some area of another’s person’s work. It refers specifically to the critique of someone else’s written or artistic work that would allow that person to further improve the work or to improve their approach to future endeavors."

And if you read one of the main stickies in this category:

Please be reminded that you're only allowed to post 1 picture per week for critique request.

There are queries about the counting of the week, as we cannot standardize when a week starts for all members, the week is calculated from the time the 1st post is made for the preceding thread.

Ahso..my apology neh...the first posting was 3 weeks ago. The second is riding piggy upon the first, I get the idea now.
after another week , can add the 3rd shot.

Constructive advice / suggestion will automatically generated when viewers ( especially those which are much experienced ) sees an effort in the shooting process.

As which I see, almost nonexisting, not surprising some may murmured... wow like that I also can.

Some years back , I had the rare fortunate opportunity to have a peek-a-boo visit to a top notch food photographer's studio.

Besides being eye opening, during that short tour...two statement which he spoken to me has made strong impact to my following routine of work.



* the more time you spent in the pre-production period will means you need to spent less time for the post-production.

* no matter how messy the preparation area looks, but once the dish is ready to transfer over to the shooting platform, it just have to be immaculate.

And converting it will be...

* no matter how moody you are ( the radio DJ or the TV news / programme presenter ), one onair lighted up, you just have to be the best.

* no matter how moody you are....the student...once in the examination hall...you can't go to sleep.

For the first pic, i would say the wrong cropping is used. the food seemed to be squeezed, and suffocated.

The color" of the meat is not vibrant... do look at some food blog for excellent shots... but were prime lens used for this. the color really CMI... jiayou jiayou..
