i dont think they are similarly priced, pentax about 200$ cheaper..the major issues you'll likely get for d5000 is lack of built in motor and for the kx is the focus points not visible in viewfinder..i find both of these issues not really major so you decide yourself which you think will affect you most..

er its approximately the same after all the free goodies maybe cheaper by 100 bucks. so what is your take on it if 100 bucks is not an issue

my take is D5000 coz I hold nikon lenses...what's your take then?:)

hahah cos i am a total newbie so i do not have any lenses with me, so i am a free agent

ooh...in this case, it's best to look for the one with better bang for money...I feel it's the KX...higher ISO performance.;p

i'm biased towards nikon, all my friends and family use nikon, during one of our photoshoot, we just swap lenses and accessories..best advise is hold and feel both, take whichever feels the most comfortable and never look back, you'll have much much bigger headaches and challenges to deal with once you already have a dslr

definitely Kx... d5000 doesn't have focus motor or image stabiliser (VR) in the body... which make the purchasing of lens more expensive
if u wanna go into nikon, i rather suggest u take D90

Anyway, some of my KX friends complain that pentax mount lenses are more ex...is it true..?TS should try to do some research...
*If TS is only focusing on the body, KX definitely has higher specs.*

pentax mount may be more ex because its not so easily available (yet)... but no matter wat... a tamron 17-50 f2.8 non-vc will always be cheaper than a tamron 17-50 f2.8 vc (watever mount) (by about $200 - $300)... haha

3rd party lenses on Pentax mount are the same price. :)

OEM Pentax lenses are usually cheaper than the other major brands. The Price Guide section should provide a good reference.

TS,

I think many good points have already been made

Kx
1. Good high ISO performance
2. On camera drive motor
3. Works with all Pentax K-mount lenses (old or new) with metering and AF confirmation
4. On camera shake reduction

5. Bad - no superimposed AF point on the viewfinder. AF confirmation is via beep sound and focus indicator located at the bottom on viewfinder (ie. where the other info like ISO, exp, f-stop, shutter speed are)

D5000 is a nice camera as well if you plan on using the Nikon system and lenses. Only thing to note is the lack of an on camera lens drive motor and on-camera shake reduction.

Don't look at freebies for any camera that you are going to buy. Most will not be that good and will easily be outgrown.
Eg.
1. Camera bag that has thin padding, no inside partitioning, uncomfortable to carry.
2. SD card that has the slowest write speed and not suitable for video
3. mini-tripod/flimsy tripod that is not stable

Current Lens do have versions of image stablisers or no image stablisers. The ones with image stablisers will definitely be more ex for any brands. For the price of lenses, it's really something you wud need to consider when purchasing...probably you can take a look at pinholecam/skyguy reply + do your own research...

think of what are the lenses you will get to have a set of tools you need...gauge the price then decide..anyway, both D5000 and KX are good as a startup..

*urging need to ask* are KX and D5K really the same price? Some shops give the same freebies at very different prices I feel...I think my friend got extra batt, tripod, bag, SDHC card when he bought KX at few hundred bucks cheaper than D5K...

yups around the same price if u add the freebies. hahah. i am not too sure if the superimposed AF point is really important?

I look into the viewfinder and I'm not sure which one is activated. Feels insecure.:bsmilie:
I thot it's the centre one but I can't be sure, probably the left...or maybe it's the right one...out of the 11 AF points. It's not lit up.:D

There are other ways to overcome it. But I'm not used to it. Probably as a new user, you won't miss having the AF points.
Video mode is very good(which I don't need, not sure about you..)

That is probably a personal thing -- I'm used to the AF point indication, but think I can probably get used to living w/o it cause I generally just use the centre point. That's why it would be a really good idea to get some hands-on time with the 2 cameras you have shortlisted.
It's not just that the body 'feels right in your hand', but also that you personally like the accessibility of the controls, the operation of the menu, maybe even the sound of the shutter (we all have our little quirks!) -- how the camera feels and operates.

unless the freebie is a dry cabinet (not dry box)... i think in a few month time u will get a better quality of what the freebie gives (bag, tripod, SD card)
