Hi all,

I ordered an extension tube from ebay. When i mount it between my camera body and lens, it shows "F--". I can't seem to do anything with the camera.

Any idea how to use it? or there is certain settings i have to set first?

Fyi, the brand is massa.

Thanks.

In the first place, does your extension tube has CPU coupling?

It doesn't have.

For manual extension tubes, you require a lens with a built in aperture ring to set aperture .
Your 18-105 is a 'G' lens which does not come with a aperture ring.
You can use your current extension tube for AF or AF-D lenses.
Or you can get the AF extension tubes.

will it work with prime lens? 50mm F1.8?

it may... if it have aperture ring... wonder if it will even focus or allow u to release shutter

u need to use manual mode without the help of auto exposure and of course no autofocus as well this kind of extension tube

Yes, it will.. set non-cpu contacts in ur cam settings and dial in ur prime settings..

release yes.. focus only manual..

Thanks guys. Sorry for the late reply. Just gotten the prime lens. It looks dark and blur when i view thru the viewfinder. Perhaps i didn't off set to non cpu as mentioned. I will try again later and post later.

- shooting with extension means pushing the lens further, i.e. path for light is longer and there is loss of light, so it will be darker.
- shooting macro means shallow dof and any movement even very small ones are greatly magnified, so it is easy to be blurry.
- D90 needs cpu contact to read signal, so non-cpu type extension tube will not transmit information and you will get F--
- G lens can't set aperture manually in this context, so useless unless you shot at f/22 all the time
- not sure if your extension tube allows the lens aperture to open up, please check your 50mm when mounted look through the lens, it is wide open or is the aperture closed? suspect it is open. If it does not have the aperture coupling (open the lens aperture until shooting time then close them for shooting) then you will have full time stopped down situation. The procedure is then focus with the aperture wide open (or nearly wide open) and then stop down the lens to desired aperture to shoot. Brings back memory of the 70's and early 80's.
- MF all the way for your situation.

If you want a simpler way out, get the Kenko extension tube set, it will transmit aperture value, AF (not that it is all that useful in macro), let you set aperture on G lens from the body. About $200 for a set of 3.

How to set non-cpu contacts on D90?

Thanks for your advice. I didn't expect it to be so complicated. Thought wanna get something cheaper to try. sigh..

Sorry to "Hajack" this thread...just like to ask, I am using D90 with 105mm VR macro lens (a 'G' lens) I shoot macro in manual mode.

Was wondering it should works well with the below extension tube (with out AF) right?

Thanks for spending your precious time to read. :)

Hi JC1808,

I have it, and as mentioned above, "G" lens do not let u adjust your aperture. So unless you want all your shots at f/22... better off pairing with a 50mm AF-D.
