1. in what area is critique to be sought?
Lighting and composition

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
I think Singaporeans are typically over conservative and sensitive when it comes to street portrait and hence i really do hope i am able to break that ice and encourage others to be more open in this area.

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
This picture is taken in little india and he is just a dishwasher, washing his dishes at one of the back alley. Taken in the early afternoon

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
I am here to find out and learn from all your valuable critiques :D

Ok, I believe the exposure would be considered on the high side as the shirt is blown already with the face bordering on the high point esp near the forehead.

As for the BG, it's still acceptable for a street shoot on the go, but you may wish to consider using a cleaner BG in future.

And the crop is a lil tight on the top, where you cut off the top of his head but left in the shoulders.

Very well taken..Can even see the sweat...
This guy really patient, wait for you to compose...hahaha..Cheers man...:)

I agree with you Zac, i should have composed better. haha. thanks for your comment!
and yes bmnna7, the man was very patient indeed. hahaha

i kinda like it the way it is, your picture placed the centre of interest right on his left eye, eyebrows and the wrinkles around the left eye..
kinda like telling the story of the hardship of this china worker (i assumed)

cropping more on shoulders might shift the centre, which is already perfect imho..

but i agree with zac, it's a little too high on the exposure..

this is a nice pic. care to share how u did the post processing?

nice shot. i like how you captured the beads of perspiration. do you have one of him washing the dishes?

I think this is a nice headshot. You can see the clear details of his face like the wrinkles, the facial pigmentation & the sweat droplets. But maybe should show a bit more of the shoulders & not frame it so tight and position him alittle off centre. But you will have to be careful of the exposure on the white shirt/towel.

Or maybe since it's street photography, you could take him washing the dishes. It will tell a very good story. That's just my own personal 2 cents worth of opinon :)

Wow! This is a real nice capture on the streets. I'd tried street, but it isn't easy.

haha thank u all so much for ur wonderful comments! :) anyway, i did not take a picture of him washing the dishes. I was using a 85mm, and i was kinda constraint by the limited space at the back alley. haha. But i wish i had :)

I like. NOthing much to C&C about. GOOD!

Thanks charles! I am sure you are being too nice, and i am certain that there are several areas i could work on (exposure, framing etc), but nonetheless, thanks for the wonderful comments!

Oh and yes, its tough doing street shots, but i guess to key to doing it is to be brave :) Kindly ask your subject if they mind you taking a shot of them (thats if u wanna take a portrait of them), but if its candid shot, just snap and run, but dont be over obtrusive of cos :) haha.

Thanks Deloi! anyway for post processing, i adjusted the level, curves for exposure correct. And maybe a little dodge and burn :) Some additional stuff would be sharpening and vignette. thats all i guess.

v nice, regarding cropping, i think u should give a bit more head room for the hair or else to make it nice and tight, chop off the neck. (more balance in terms of subject weight or symmetrical imo) i like the colours and saturation, it shows a hard days work, a little vintage feel. although his face looks a bit pale, like his gonna fall sick. lol. GJ!!! vvv nice!

I'd rather an environmental portrait for this kinda thing.

Believe it or not, im serious about my comments. Theory aside, you manged to capture his natural smile and the few droplet of "sweat". Most importantly, the subject is photogenic too. Everything blend in well. I'm a aesthetic person and visual freak..
