Hi all,

Actually i'm using a Canon EOS 400D and thinking of upgrading to a better body. Currently having a 18-55mm and 50-250mm lens kits.

Any recommendation for the upgrade or should i wait?

Had try out the canon 7d and i must say i very impress with the performance but the price is kind of high.

If you feel that you need the upgrade for your photography preferences and can afford the newest semi-pro bodies, go ahead.

However if you need the upgrade but has limited budget, perhaps go for a 2nd hand body of an older body, such as 40D or 50D. A 7D could set you back by $2.2k while a 2nd hand 40D or 50D will set you back only about $800 or $1100 respectively. You can use the money saved to buy other gear such as better lenses than the kit lenses you have or other accessories.

hmm. may not be. unless he is planning to get 2.8 or faster lenses i doubt there is a need forhim to up his gear. on the other hand, 7d can still work with hsi lenses as its able to accept the efs system, something i personally like. efs has some great lenses but they cant be matched up with any of the higher end cameras like 5d and the full frames. 7d is a good choice:thumbsup:

I think you have the 18-55 and 55-250 right?

When you mentioned you are impress with the performance, which is the function that you are impress with?

IF you have a 7D now, what is your expectation you feel the 7D would give you before you actually take a picture? What are the improvements?

Cheers

Wait for..?

XXXD - 550D is as new as it gets, I dont see 600D coming out anytime soon
XXD - 50D seems to be at the end of its product life, canonrumours cites end of the year for the replacement
XD - 1D4 is new, 7D is quite new too. Only 5D2 might have a replacement, but that one is probably early next year no one knows.

Unless you are looking at 5D2 or 50D replacement; what are you waiting for?

I guess i will have to read up and do a comparision.

Ya lor, the only reason for me to stay with canon is that i do have the len kits that i can use with my next purchase of the camera body. I do have the intention of upgrading more lens in future.

When i try out at the canon shop at vivo, seems to me that the shutter speed, camera output, overall feel of 7d is so much better than my current set.
The only concern is the price of the 7D and was hoping that can get it below 1.8k.

You are right. Other than the 7D, the other one that i'm looking at is the 50D but seems like it's been around for quite sometime and read from the forum that there might be a replacement model coming soon.

Shutter speed? I think you mean frame rate? 7D has higher frame rate but u need to ask urself if u really need 8 fps continuous shooting...Personally I feel if ur not a sports pg u dunnid that high framerate

idk about camera output, but overall feel is definitely better cuz of the larger grip.

As for price, I think very low chance u can get a new 7D for that price, need to get 2nd hand ba

Yeap...

Frame rate. Just think will be good to have the 8fps but guess that not the only reason of getting the 7D.

Question, when you tried the 7D at the showroom, what lens was attached to the camera? Do you think that lens may be part of the factors that resulted in the good IQ?

Erm, seriously i never notice!!

Ya. If the lens on the display model is a $2k lens, even if the camera is a 350D, it will still look much better than your 400D with a kit lens.

This is the $64,000 question everyone ask at a certain point in time.

Make a list of features your existing camera has. Then make a list of the features you need that is lacking. Do a simple comparison and then decide whether you need an upgrade. Seriously, 400D is already a good camera. Upgrading to 7D or even the newer 550D will not make much sense unless you also want to take HD videos.

What you should be looking into would be better optics or prime lens to give your pictures some more kick.

Agree that he may not need to upgrade.

The main reason I recommend the older bodies is to save money unless he needs some special feature that 7D has which the 40D/50D doesn't have.

Haha, It will no doubt feel and function 'better' because you are trying cameras of different levels. I'll want a 7D because of the reported better sealing too. However may be an overkill for me because I don't exactly go to places with averse weather elements.

Thanks for all the valuable feedbacks.

Guess I will just stay put with my camera body and try to source for new toys to enhance my photography experiences!!

Cheers!!

Exactly thats the point.

Body makes least of the differences, most of the difference are made by the lenses, flash, filters and ADOBE!!!.

TSer >> You ask a simple question to yourself... does your current body seriously limiting you to achieve what you desire ?
From many of my friend's and my own experience I can say that most of the time it's not the body.... it's the lens, it's the flash, it's the filter and so many other things!!

Seriously find out what is limiting you and focus on that... in case it's the body for you then happily upgrade... otherwise you will be again in the same situation!!

I like to suggest getting a new lens then changing the body.
You will see a major difference in your pictures when you use a good lens.

If you don't be believe me, try to borrow or rent a 100mm Macro "L" lens and see the image quality on your 400D. You will realise that the lens is also an important part of the equation BODY+LENS+PHOTOG=PICTURES

Looking at your current equipment setup, lens upgrade is a option..

I always thought that body make the big differences all these while!! Thanks for your enlightenment.

With my current set of lens for daily use, what other lens you recommend?

Can advise on what other lens that I can consider? Most of the time will be shooting portrait.
