DSLR recommendations..

Hi people, im new to the forum, and also to DSLR.

Previously im using a Panasonic Lumix FS-62 Digital Camera, and i've decided to move on to a DSLR, to explore new grounds.

Im someone who loves taking scenery, landscapes and also Night shots.

Right now i've considered 3 models of DSLR;
1) Pentax K-x (dual kit lens)
2) Nikon D90 (comes with a special price and Nikon promo for the month of June)
3) EOS 550D

Im looking more at the best bang for bucks, thanks!

Pentax K-x(Great for night shots) is the best bang for the buck at $899 for the dual kit lens:thumbsup:

U bound to get mixed opinions in here, each to their own, ur best bet lies in WWW, where there's abundance of useful info/cam reviews that might makes ur decision making better..

Be careful with 'must buy' ... define your needs first, never buy according "let's see, might be useful in future".

hi, im a newbie too, since u said that, try looking at the system line-up, what pentax have to offer and what nikon has to offer, from my basic knowledge, u not only buying a camera but u also will buy into the whole system...

best bang for bucks would be the Kx- imho of course...

haha i do feel like buying both though lol! But most people advice me to get a D90 as its easier to move up (meaning its dynamic, more lenses!)

Canon also has alot of lenses, so do the other brands. imo as long as you're not a wildlife pg who has to use those 600mm lenses, any system will work for u

How many lenses do you want to use? Have a look here and compare with the line-up of Canon and Nikon with regards to focal length coverage:

Example: the highly regarded Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is also available for Pentax mount.

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, all have lenses that will cover your needs. Some people even have 2 systems, for example, they may use Sony or Nikon for landscape shots (since they have great wide-angle lenses) but use Canon for birding/sports photography (since they have a lot of good long telephoto lenses).

However, third-party lenses from Tamron and Sigma are usually available for the major mounts anyway.

Sorry, you'll need to "molest" all your options (go to the IT show and fondle - CAM BODIES THAT IS - until you're satisfied) and draw your own conclusions.. Frankly, all 3 that you've mentioned at pretty good cameras (lets not talk about price comparisons as that is very subjective unless price is the ONLY concern you care about). As for KX-y body, I'm afraid the only option would be to visit a store that sells it... don't think it will be at IT shows.

If you buy purely based on opinions and recommendations without actually trying it out the individual bodies yourself then you might end up something that doesn't feel right in your hands or to your eyes (where FV or menus are concerned).

Would you do that if you're buying a CAR? Just listen to recommendations and then go right to the showroom and put the money down without even trying it? Noway Jose! :bsmilie:

I like the Kx, but 1 thing I have read is that it has no AF points, unlike the 2 cameras you've listed in your first post. I wonder if that is true.

Other than that, the Kx makes for a good case at a cheaper entry point.

I think you mean no VISIBLE AF points. Yeah, it's one thing that kind of spoils it for me too

Some other brands too have 600mm lens, not only Canon...eg AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR
