Just gotten my FA50 as a gift from my husband.
Tried putting it onto my K-X just now.

But can't take pictures.
The Aperture value on the info screen shows ---.

Wonder what is wrong?

And tried putting it to other modes but it only shows AV can b used?

Please advise!!
Thanks!

As Flowerpot said, turn the aperture ring to 'A'

Agree with Flowerpot. Turn it to "A" then u get the aperture.

The button below the lens mount where there is "AF or MF". U need to turn to AF for auto focus.

marcus

There is a tiny button at the left side of the lens (looking from top view of yr kx)... Press that button and turn the knob until it is at "A" position, aligned exactly at the centre of the lens... With this, then you can start snap snap snap liao... :)

does it have an aperture ring? make sure its set to the smallest aperture. If it is, make sure the lens is properly screwed into the body. contacts might not be in touch.

It's not a M42 lens, so don't screw.:bsmilie:

Got it!!
Thanks guys..

But wondering, if the aperture ring have to stay at A, than what is the manual aperture ring for?

A = auto aperture (use dial to control).

If want to use the manual aperture we need to turn on the function inside the camera :)

"backward" compatibility since FA50 was introduce some time back... quite a number of film cam aperture is set using the aperture ring.... current release of DA lenses are all with no aperture ring since its cater to DSLR...

Can anyone who owns this lens as well reccomend me a good Filter for this lens that will imrpove picture quality.. Or just acts as a protection??

Seems very hard to find a 49mm filter.

this also has added benefit of being usable with extension tubes without having to have the lens wide open. :)

Cheap---Hoya/Kenko
Expensive---B+W

Should not be difficult to find filter lens... There are many vendors carrying this item... You can find them in the Mass Sales... If not, you can try those reputable shops, ie. SLR Rev, Manly, Alan Photo, Orient Photo, etc... I have gotten my Hoya HMC filter lens from Manly for all my lenses... :) Around $20 each, I think...

Can try Camera Workshop.
The normal Hoya HMC UV 49mm costs about S$16.00.

dun think it will improve the picture quality, rather it degrades it... :bsmilie:

expensive filter --> B+W / heliopan...whether they are good i dunno...but i do use them on some of my lenses...

murami seems decent and can be found easily online....

i think depends on the extension tubes.... if it doesn't have the aperture coupled, then its always at the smallest aperture for those DA lens... even if its aperture coupled, if im not wrong when a shot is taken, the aperture level is release and you are still shooting at the smallest aperture for DA lens...

A lens hood definetly will incrase IQ.

I read that some people complain that this lens is soft wide open ,but is actually caused by flare(yea flare can cause blurness) and just adding a lens hood solved the softness at f1.4

will try to find the source later ...

Yes,
I have read from others that a filter is not necessary.
A lens hood was reccomended thou, A metal lens hood so can leave it on the lens with a cap on.
Instead of those rubber lens hood which have to remove before keeping your camera.

I managed to search alot of kind of metal lens hood.
But there is standard, tele & wide.
Which should i get for my FA 50?

Also, Would a hood be necessary for my kit lens as well?

For 50mm, you could use the standard lens hood (in fact slightly longer hoods also can as it is telephoto on aps-c cropped sensors, yeah, standard round hoods will do just fine). U could add a quality filter (around $50 from CS mass sales).

The two problems are that you may find a 49mm screw threaded filter rarer than say the 52mm. And for the metal hood, it's almost non-exisitent in local retail. They are easily found off the shelf in say Japan (brandless but good quality ones goes for some SGD10), or online sources (you may want venture for a nice B+W or Heliopan branded hood for like SGD50-60).

As for your kit lens, you may want to purchase the original Pentax hood for the 18-55 zooms. Zooms are abit more complicated (as in designed specifically) in terms of hood requirements and are usually petal-shaped to account for the wide ends.
