Agreed to a certain extent.. but for diff aspects of photography, we still need diff lens
to fulfill diff purpose..

I felt the below perform best for me (though maybe some not fully optimized to its potential esp 135 DC)

Macro: NIKKOR AFD 200mm Micro f/4
Portraiture: NIKKOR AFD 135mm DC f/2
Landscape: NIKKOR 16-35mm VR f/4
Wildlife: Can't comment
General Purpose: NIKKOR AFS 24-70mm f/2.8G ED

The way I see it..... you are better off cleaning up the entire Nikkor catalogue and filter out the lenses you don't need later and sell them on the 2nd hand market since you have no budget constraint..... I'm serious.

So I take it you have the photography side of it sorted already? I'd try to be the best at that before trying to find the best lenses.

The 10.5 fisheye might be a cracking lens and better than the 16 fisheye but it's of no use to you on a D700. The 105DC might be a great lens but it's not any good if you're trying to take an image of a small insect. Etc.

Come to think of it if you have no budget constraints ditch the D700 and get a D3x and D3s, and to be honest making room in the kit bag for a medium format setup would probably also give you a better quality increase than small differences from lens to lens.

I had another look at the box just to confirm - it's just "D700", no "Fx" suffix. FX format yes, but it does not form part of the model name.

Everyone probably has different favourites for each segment of photography that you mentioned, and they produce the best results with that lens because they got used to it and know its limitations and advantages. Thus I do not really think this thread will yield a definite answer for you, whether you are intending to purchase the best lenses or justify recent purchases or just confirm your views with others.

Portrait - 24mm f/1.4
Landscape - 70-200mm f/2.8
Wildlife - 800 f/5.6
General purpose - 50mm f/1.8
