Hi, all. I am planning to sell my DA 16-45 and raise fund for DA*16-50.
After i posted to the WTSell, i got the 2nd thought, is that worthy for me to do that. Because my asking price for DA 16-45 is only 350 SG dollar, but the DA*16-50 already reach 1200++ SG dollar. So I wanna ask the ones who have used the both, it that worthy to make the change ? Or i still can sell it and buy the tomron one? Thanks.

Never try DA* 16-50 before so can't comment on that.

However u should also consider the tamron 17-50 F2.8 . It's really a very shape and good lens :)

Thanks for your advices, i am also considering that lens, but prefer to pentax one by now, waiting to see how the others say about the da*, if it doesnot worthy, i will buy the tamron one.

From reviews i have seen, the tamron has better edge to edge sharpness , but the pentax has better center sharpness. Some reviews show that the pentax has abit of CA wide open.

As for the pentax you are getting WR , SDM , and the better built quality.

btw you might want to wait for the new sigma 17-50 f2.8 to come out

I've used both lens before.
from DA 16-45mm to DA*16-50mm... what you mainly gain is
1. an extra stop... f2.8 as compared to f4
2. Weather sealing
3. SDM - Focusing is quiet
4. Superb build quality

If these few factors are appealing to you, I think it might be worth an upgrade.

Unless you really need the weather seal, then go for the DA*16-50 otherwise get the Tamron 17-50, or the Sigma 18-50 or the newer Sigma 17-50 (Not sure if in sG already or not). Even the Sigma 17-70 is great.

performance tests are all out there for you to find.

other than that, the 16-50 * has weather sealing, the 16-45 does not.

the 16-50 also has a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8, versus f/4.

Nah, the Pentax DA* is something special...
You DA* 16-50mm owner, and you still recommend the 3rd party lenses...

gain some weight also...:bsmilie:

Like Denis said, the DA* lenses are something special. It's not just the weather sealing body w/ wider aperture, it's something special about the photos they took. If you put the Tamron 1750 and DA*1650 side by side, you'd feel the Tamron is so cheaply made.

Personally I'd top up a bit more to get the DA*1650. To me I'd go w/ Pentax made lenses as much as possible, otherwise no point using Pentax. I do use third party lenses too, but only those very special ones ;)

Its not really top up "abit" ... Its top up 2X

But i agree that pentax lenses do make a picture have that special feel to it the colours and all

Poor guy on budget . . .

But IF TS has the $$$ then I say BUY the DA* 16-50mm F2.8. You will not regret it . . .:devil:

Aiyah, throw them into the deep end of LBA.
Recommend cheap alternative and eventually they will spend more later when the honeymoon with the cheapie is over and they feel the need to get something better. Better to buy with a plan and save up for the better lens. I've played the upgrade game long enough and if I could do it all over again, I'd go direct to the best that I can afford, would definitely have spent less in the process. "Buy cheap, pay twice" really rings true.

If not in a hurry, wait.

the Sigma 17-50 2.8 has built in HSM for faster/quieter autofocus, internal focusing and comes with 2 years warranty.

specs wise, it gives a lot of expensive lens a run for the money and all thats left is real life reviews which may make or break the sales of the lens.

Just like me lor...just buy. Now happily using it till don't feel there is a price...

The question of DA*16-50 vs the alternatives comes up a lot. My take is always that if you have the funds, and that a 16/17/18-50mm zoom lens is something you'll use a lot, get the DA* and you won't regret it. The built and the handling of the DA* lenses is simply a cut above the rest, and for a lens that you use extensively, you want it to feel good and inspire confidence.

Yeah, like me, I got the Sigma 17-70 first then upgraded to the DA* but I have no regrets about the lens. Great to use anytime anywhere including in the rain . . .

With a nickname like Treasurer, this thread can close already. DA* 16-50mm on liao. :bsmilie:

Haha, i appreciate all your advises. Finally i decide to have a DA*16-50, because I think even though I get a Tamron or Sigma one, in the end I still will turn to Pentax. It is a waste of time and money. Again, thanks you all.:):):)
