I didn't know where else to post this thread cos i couldn't find a category which discusses filters. Since i use canon then i just post this here.

I recently bought 2 different types of Hoya UV filters for my 10-22 and 24-105.

Here's a picture of both filters


How many different types of UV filters does Hoya carry and how many different variations of packaging do they have?

I know that the 2 that i bought are different cos the one on the left is the normal sized type and the one on the left is the slimmer type. I bought the normal one from Cathay and the slim from MS. The normal one is for my 24-105 and the slimmer one is for my 10-22.

Just curious to know, cos i have seen a couple of variations of Hoya UV filters... why there seems to be so many?

The one from cathay cost $50+ and the one from MS cost $50.

First I used the normal kenko uv filter for my 24-105mm. Then I upgraded to Hoya HD uv filter costing $95. Happy and feeling better with the HD strength

Hi,
The left type filter is the standard coating hoya filter and the right type filter is the Hoya Pro 1 series which is a very good one. You should use at least the right type filter one for your lens as your lens is very good lens. IMHO, the standard coating one will degrade the quality of your L lens.

Hoya HD uv filter is good enough right?

Ya... Hoya HD filter is also very good filter... use hardened optical glass which is tough and easier to clean.

Now i'm even more confused...but the supposed protector also serves as a uv filter? or is it only a protection filter?

UV filter will block UV light and can serve as a protector (any filter put in-front of the lens is a protector) while the Protector (or Clear) filter is a clear filter without any filtering effect.. just for protection.

Any filter will degrade the quality of your lens to a certain degree as the light will pass through your filter first before your lens. A very good filter will degrade very little (might not be visible), but a bad filter will degrade the quality of your lens by a lot.

By the way, IMHO, if you want to put a filter, put at least a filter that is multi-coated.

For Digital Sensors, UV Filters are generally not needed, unlike film. However, UV filters can serve to filter out Haze also.

Besides the versions from manufacturer, I believe filters are many a times counterfeits. It's very easy to make a duplicate piece of glass. ;( The same Hoya HMC UV filter of same size are available in different color packaging, with different cover layout and, even differnt writing on the filter ring The same 58mm HMC UV, some shops selling as cheap as $10 (in HK), $25(SG) and quoted high as $80(SG)

Are you suggesting that a lousy filter on a lousy lens will make no difference to the original quality of the lens since it's a "suitable" one?

ANY glass you add in front of your lens is going to degrade the quality. Like soons mentioned, there is no need for a UV filter for use with DSLRs (that are not modded for IR). Also, there is no "haze" that can be cut with a UV filter here. It's only useful whether you travel to higher grounds.

I have the left one too, and it is a UV filter but is not multi-coated. I tested it and it causes flaring, esp shooting at lighted objects. Get at least a multi-coated one in the future. Kenko HMC ones are quite cheap.

there are too many variations alr. lolx in fact for HOYA standard, they have SLIM as well. i just bought it. so there r just simply too many variations.

if will be nice if ur friends have the same filter size as ur cam. then u can compare it side by side.

maybe you are right, but definitely different grade!
