Wide Angle Lense advice needed

Hi All,

I currently have a Nikon D70s body. Lately i have been interested in getting a Wide Angle Lense for landscape and scenery. What lense would you guys recommend? Im looking for one that is value for money and within my budget of $1000. All advice would be much appreciated.

sigma 8-16
tokina 11-16 f/2.8 (this is the best uwa lens for crop)


and quite a few more... which i forgot..

I am willing to wager that you already have a wide-angle lens (note: lens singular, not lense) in your possession. If you bought your D70s as a kit you already have the 18-70mm; the 18mm end is considered wide-angle.

You are probably referring to the ultra wide angle variety, then for 1k and under you probably only have the following current lenses to consider:
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6
Tokina 11-16 f/2.8

If you can up your budget a bit there is one more contender:
Nikon 12-24 F/4

The Tokina is probably your best bet, read some reviews and see which one you prefer.

Yep i have the kit lens which is the 18 - 70 but im going for an ultra wide angle. the nikon lens is definitely out of my budget though. seems like the "tokina 11-16 f/2.8" and "Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 " are the more popular choices.

any takers for the "SP AF11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II LD Aspherical [IF]" or SP AF10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di-II LD Aspherical [IF]"?

i use tokina 11-16, its good but for the distortion at the edge, you may wanna avoid it.. internal zoom and focus. its sharp and color saturation is quite good.. especially the f/2.8 !

Don't forget the Sigma 8-16mm which is the widest available rectilinear lens for your D70s.

From the "SP" designation, I think the 2 lenses TS was referring to are both Tamron lenses.

imho, i think it is not a must have but good to have thingy

actually, never mind, i just saw photozone.de's test report:

if this is true, then corner sharpness is even WORSE than f/4-5.6.

perhaps photozone.de got a lemon, but even then, i don't see much improvement over the f/4-5.6

hence, if threadstarter considering both, i suggest getting the f/4-5.6

After the ring there is a build-in, petal-type, metal lens hood. It encloses a big (5.5 cm in diameter) and convex element, which changes its position with the change of focal length – it is the most hidden inside the barrel at the maximum focal length and it is the most extended at 8 mm. Unfortunately the producer didn’t anticipate a possibility of using any filters here.

you should go for tokina 11-16 2.8

why? in terms of price and performance , this is the best.

sigma 10-20 is overpriced in singapore. and tokina is not.

also, 2.8 will allow you to get better pics in the night. i strongly recommend 11-16.
