We do have a Canon priceguide for a reason...

Hmm.. for tt kidna budget u migth wan to chk out the B/S section and mass sales for 3rd party alternatives :)

nissin Di622 price around 210

ya, nissin 622 is definitely 210 cheapest alr i guess. but its a 3rd party one and no lcd for this model. but nissin 866 will be better lah less restrictions but cost around 400+.

i've an alternative for u. it cost onli 170, i'm really serious, it cost onli 170 with built in diffuser and also a LCD screen. this is almost on par with the canon flashes, cheaper than the popular nissin model and works just as good and very beautiful design.

if u r keen, do pm me for more information. no obligations and its NOT those cheapo flashes, dont worry.

Yongnuo flash .. I've 2 YN420 II ... cheap and nice .. but limitation is that it doesnt hv ETTL .... there is a Canon ETTL version .. u might wanna research and youtube one tt ..

My recommendation is to save up and get canon 580EX II .. if u intend to use often ... AF-Assist Beam is quite useful in the night ...

Budget flash look here ;)

What do you mean by portraits? Flattering headshots of your gf outdoors? Character studies of your grandparents? Indoors? Outdoors?
A TTL/ETTL unit like the Canon 430/420 or 3rd party equivalents would be a great general purpose flash, but hardly the last word in lighting control. If all you want is a little daylight fill flash, they will do fine (your pop-up would be okay too). They're great for general indoor lighting too.
But if you're really interested in learning about and playing around with portrait lighting on the cheap, you might want to consider a couple of inexpensive manual/auto flashes (no TTL), light stands and modifiers (umbrellas are easy). Perhaps a small slave flash with a home-made snoot for a hair light.
I have a couple of old Nissin hammerheads and a Sunpak 383 (love this flash!) bought thru B&S for just this sort of thing. The Vivitar 283 HV is also a popular choice, although it normally sells for more than the Sunpak (check the trigger voltages for older flashes though -- some will fry your DSLR. Google if not sure)
It's more work, but ask anyone who's tried -- getting the flash off the camera and using light modifiers such as softboxes / umbrellas gives you so much more scope and control. A single flash on your hotshoe, no matter what fancy modifier or wall/ceiling bounce doesn't compare.

well i have something that has ETTL/ITTL. thats y i dont call it cheapo lol. and its very well built, like a carbon copy of canon. designed by local company. it think its pretty cool and he might wanna get it. so just recommending him. but i cant advertise the whole thingy here if not i might just get banned lol.

Wah! So good. Mush share right?

Anyway if you are not affiliated with the company, it should be fine.

That Tumax flash with TTL?? (can't remember model name); rebadged of course ;)

brilliant is one of them LOL! considering the price its really value for money. there's another one though.. but slipped my mind whats that.
